Anybody know the drinking game called God Save the Queen?
Debates on how it started, but basically if a coin is dropped in your drink you have to have to down it.
Now look at this page:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/glasgow_and_west/8276334.stm
Through the top picture the BBC are subtly and possibly subconciously saying they don't support the queen. A great British insitution should not be promoting such a thing!

now lets see how many poeple this wound up

can't say it's got anything to do with it :/
granted there's a coin in the beer, but that's just to make it "splashy" as a pint sitting there would be quite dull, and the drinking game has a connection to binge drinking

So basically one of the BBC's web dudes took a stock image, probably without giving it a second thought, and you've come up with this? I think you have somewhat an overactive imagination. :p

This game I play quite often and I know it as coinage.

Rules:

Shot is entered into the glass, everyone has a coin.
Players take it in turns to bounce the coin on the table to get it into glass.
If the coin goes in the glass, the person who had the coin nominates another member to down the shot in one, but has to catch the coin in their teeth.
BUT, if the person doesn't nominate the other person with their elbow, then the person itself has to down the shot and catch the coin in their teeth.

Have played this since my early twenties so that's over 15 years. Good fun, and 'newbies' to the game are often told that the coin has been used in several games so if they swallow it by mistake, to 'fish it out' when it passes so it can be used again :)

My girlfriend and her mates played this all the time at uni - though the rules were nowhere near that complicated. Penny ends up in your drink > you down it :p Usually ended up being done with wine, with people storing pennies in the sleeves of their gowns..

This. Actually, my girlfriend just filled me in on a few other rules they had -

* You can't have an empty glass - if someone drops a penny in your empty glass, you have to fill it to the brim and down it.

* No return pennying, you have to do it to someone other than the person who just got you, thus spreading around the drunkenness.

* No double pennying - if you drop the second one in someone's glass, you have to drink it yourself.

Man, more complicated than I appreciated :p But, no catching in teeth necessary.

Down with this sort of thing!

Careful now.

Magick's threads make sense, even if you don't agree with some of his more 'out there' theories.

This however, does not!
