ok, well im about 10% into building my new system, which wasgoing to be a Q600, 8800 GTX etc.

I was buyin one component per month due to money problems..

However, both hard drives on my current system (see sig) are looking a bit shakey at the mo - random clicking and grinding, not that im surprised, they are about 5 years old now :D

any hooo, im selling it (with a fresh install and a new HDD) to my bro, and I need to get this new rig up and running sharpish:eek:

so this spec is a stop gap really, to see me through... I plan on keeping the new PSU and maybe the MOBO, or flogging the platform as a job lot, or possibly re-housing it in an el-cheapo case to sell as a system.

The parts I have got so far are:

Lian-Li pca10 case
Vista ultimate x64 oem
Thermalright U120a
WD 500GB KS
Pioneer 112d dvd-rw
sony FDD

The parts im considering buying very soon due to imminent HDD death are:

am I doing the right thing? will performance be worse than
my current rig (see sig) ?

I plan to upgrade to state of the art stuff when cash allows, at this rate it will be a penryn quad, 8800 GTX, 4x1 crucial 8500

cool, thanks for the advise, as long as it runs BF2 well, im a happy bunny :)

I was woried about the graphcs being an 8500 gt 256mb, but its gotta be an improvement over an agp 7800gs oc 256mb

can the C2D e2140 hack playing games? i guess it can, and I hope I can over clock it some for future practice :)

iirc the clock speeds on the 7800 are likley to be a touch quicker than the 8500GT, bf2 will still be playable maybe need to go to medium settings and turn off dynamic lighting/shadows to keep the fps nice.

2140 will be fine for gaming, and will overclock if you fancy a go :).

If the E2160 is back in stock then I'd suggest it over the E2140 since it has a higher multiplier but if not then the Ram you have will clock pretty high (depends on if the motherboard and CPU cooling can cope also).

Ok, some excellent tips there, thanks!

semi-pro-waster:
I was actually looking at the E2160 at a competetor site, as its not much more really.
If I couple that with my thermalright U120 which I already have, and the proposed gigabyte P35c, that should clock ok?

MP260:
My curent card is an AGP 7800, i thought the better bandwith PCIE 8500 card would negate any ill effects...or am I talking out of my butt lol
should I spend a little more on the gpu d'ya think?

thanks for any replies....

Im using this utility I got from PCFormat cover disk...HDD health and it says my disks got about a month to live, which wouldnt normally worry me apart from theres some random sounds coming from my hard disks these last months or two.
so im desperate!!!

any input welcome :)

imho theres little, if any noticeable difference between agp/pci-e.

if you can afford a bit extra have a look at :

OcUK GeForce 8600 GT 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
£54.99 £64.61 inc VAT

The E2160 with the Thermalright U120 should allow a good overclock, I'm assuming you still have all the necessary pins/fittings for the heatsink.

The additional bandwidth doesn't matter hugely for the graphics card here, if you can afford a bit extra for the graphics card then the 8600GT as mp260767 suggests or an X1950pro are both good options that are at least as good as the 7800GS or better. :)

ok, exellent...

yep, I only got the thermalright in anticipation of a quadcore, so ive got all the bits in a box in my big empty new case.

Thank you all for the tips, well appreciated, I am an nvidia fanboi, so will go with a midrange card of some sort from nvidia.

cheers!!!!!

yup, basically pc8500 stuff not using different chips to anything else. ie something using elixir chips can run a variety of speeds and its rarely worth buying the pc8500 version. you can get crucial ballistix pc6400 for £52 for a 2x1gb pack, and most people can get them doing 500Mhz on stock volts by the looks of it. or you could even go for a £43 kit of 2xpc5300 plain old crucial, as it will still have the same chips and will most likely do the same speeds aswell.

the 8500 series , well is gonna be noticeably slower than a full 7800, but i'm not that sure what a 7800gs is, its been too long, if its noticeably cut down version of a full 7800 then the 8600gt might not be much slower. a x1950 pro would be very good though, for a gaming rig the gpu is easily the most important part. don't bother buying a floppy drive, get a ddr2 only board if you can find one cheaper, get a 7200.10 500gb as, at least on ocuk it will save another £5 and put all the extra into gpu.
