I currently have a Steelseries Siberia V2 with their USB soundcard.

It does the job and I've not any complaints until the mic stopped working on it a month ago.

Task: Make BF4 sound as awesome as possible for
Budget: £130

I've been looking at a USB set again but am thinking is this the time to step into a dedicated soundcard plus headphones setup. I do want that surround sound feeling.

I have a ASUS ROG Maximus IV Extreme-Z motherboard and use an SLI GTX680 configuration if you think I should be going down the soundcard route (just to make aware of space and heat worries in my case)

Let me know your opinions,

Thanks,

Only buy a surround sound head set if you are 1. Very gullible & 2. Like bad sound quality.

So, I am a sound engineer and I'll be honest, hate these threads. I will give you the best advice possible then that'll be me done, you will have to make your own choice.

So, get the Asus Xonar DG 5.1 from OcUK. Pair this great sound card up with a good set of Sennheisers / AKG's and you are good to go.

I'd suggest Sennheiser HD449 but if you can stretch the HD518's are even better. Add a clip on mic and you are good to go.

However if you want a proper gaming headset with mic attached go for either the Sennheiser 320's (these are great for gaming as they are bass light but less good for music) or the Sennheiser 360's (out of budget I know).

Basically the best soundstage you can get in headphones is Stereo > Dolby Surround > Multi Speaker Headset. So with a stereo headset you can get the best sound and if wanted, ruin that great sound by activating Dolby through your sound card.

Fantastic advice.

Ordered the HD518's, a Zalman clip on mic + a Xonar DTX 5.1 PCI-E card.

Looking forward to giving them all a solid test run

Fantastic setup. Enjoy it!

I disagree with you, My Roccat Kave True 5.1 sound epic with Xonar D2X. Battlefield 4 sound is super good.

Received today. They sound amazing!

Was tracking footsteps really well and the FLAC collection is about to grow 1000%

The audiophile in me has began!

1. Asus Xonar DG
2. Antlion Modmic
3. Stereo Headset

recently used some frandom purple headset the missus had lying about and quite liked the fit so have got a pair of logitech UE4000's at the moment and they're very comfortable (on aear rather than around)

I'd also suggest you trial beyerdynamic if you are buying headphones. They are not heavily promoted, but they have an exceptional range of devices, which I am sure our sound engineer will confirm as they seem to be phones of choice in many of the worlds leading recording studios.

I tried beyers side by side with my new Tritton AX Pro+ when I was looking for new headphones... the beyers (or seins) are great for music, but for gaming the AXPro+ blow them out of the water for realism and surround in the same price brackets
