Man Dies in Bedford after being Tasered....

The man, aged in his 30s, was shot with the Taser gun after he threatened officers with a knife, police said.

He shouldn't have threatened police officers with a knife really should he?

Although I must admit, I'd be curious to hear the mothers tale of events.

And had he not been tasered, the police officer, whos job it is to assist in dangerous situations like this, could have a knife in his/her neck. Its swings and roundabouts. I would much rather the knife wielding idiot who threatened the cops dies than the cop whos duty it is to serve and protect.

Actually, it doesn't attribute it to the Taser, he could easily have killed himself with the knife for all we know from the report.

Thats the thing. The 'cops' stated he was threatening them with a knife. Was he waving a kitchen knife, was he lunging toward them with a bowie, was he lifting a penknife out of his pocket ?

And how many times was he tasered ?

Who's to say ? He's dead now though, so is it any different from them just shooting him with a gun ?

Will you be saying the same things if it turn out he has forgotten his medication & was a lovely family guy who just had some mental problems that were controlable ?

Just a quick slightly off topic thought, how do pacemakers react to tasers? I cant imagine they would do them much good but how do the police know weather someone is using one or not

Could have been some medical condition he had? Maybe the spasming just made him stab himself though. Latter sounds more likely since he retreated, and was found injured inside.

Absolutely yes.
He was uncontrollable and threatening police officers with a knife.
We do too much pussyfooting around in this country.

Sorry? Does it actually matter?

Gun :- Guaranteed wound, high probablity of complications/death
Taser :- No wound, low probablity of complications/death
No weapon:- Moderate probablity of harm, moderate probability of complications/death

If I was a police officer with a gun, and someone threatened me with a knife - I would've discharged my weapon. If I had a taser instead of a gun, I would use that. If I had neither... well... what am I going to do? Get stabbed.

According to the report he was already injured before police fired on him.

I am 99.99% sure that there will be an underlying medical condition that was the cause of his death.

The man was armed with a knife, what do you expect the Police Officers to do?

The way force is applied by the police is in the following order:

Verbal Communication
Physical restraint
CS Gas
Baton
Taser
Firearm.

Now I know that loads of people here are going to pick up the fact that I have listed CS gas before baton and Taser.

Now the use of a baton in this situation is dangerous because you would be working in a very small space and swinging the baton becomes difficult and it also brings you into range of the offender.

CS Gas is also no the ideal solution as spraying the gas in an enclosed space such as a room in the house effects everyone in that room, including the police officers, anyone who has experience CS Gas knows that your eye close involuntary, again this is not safe for the Police Officers.

The next non lethal, and yes I did say non lethal and I am ready for all the people who are going to yell "non lethal - the guy died" at me is a Taser.

In this situation the Taser was the safest option because:

1. The Taser only effects the person that is used against.
2. The Taser protects the safety of other parties in the room, e.g. CS Gas is indiscriminate, the Taser is a targeted weapon.
3. The use of the Taser protects the safety of the Police Officer, it keeps them out of range of a man armed with a lethal weapon.

Any sending a dog in is also a non starter as you could not guarantee that the dog would only seize the offender.

If you read the article it is safe to deduce that situation was one of a 30 year old man and his mother who you can deduce would be around 45 - 50 years old in what could become a hostage situation.

The next option after a Taser is the use of Lethal force, and yes I know he died but as I have said I am 99.99% sure that cause of death will be an underlying medical condition.

At the end of the day the only reason the Police were there was because there was a man armed with a knife.
