I am 99.99% sure that there will be an underlying medical condition that was the cause of his death.
The man was armed with a knife, what do you expect the Police Officers to do?
The way force is applied by the police is in the following order:
Verbal Communication
Physical restraint
CS Gas
Baton
Taser
Firearm.
Now I know that loads of people here are going to pick up the fact that I have listed CS gas before baton and Taser.
Now the use of a baton in this situation is dangerous because you would be working in a very small space and swinging the baton becomes difficult and it also brings you into range of the offender.
CS Gas is also no the ideal solution as spraying the gas in an enclosed space such as a room in the house effects everyone in that room, including the police officers, anyone who has experience CS Gas knows that your eye close involuntary, again this is not safe for the Police Officers.
The next non lethal, and yes I did say non lethal and I am ready for all the people who are going to yell "non lethal - the guy died" at me is a Taser.
In this situation the Taser was the safest option because:
1. The Taser only effects the person that is used against.
2. The Taser protects the safety of other parties in the room, e.g. CS Gas is indiscriminate, the Taser is a targeted weapon.
3. The use of the Taser protects the safety of the Police Officer, it keeps them out of range of a man armed with a lethal weapon.
Any sending a dog in is also a non starter as you could not guarantee that the dog would only seize the offender.
If you read the article it is safe to deduce that situation was one of a 30 year old man and his mother who you can deduce would be around 45 - 50 years old in what could become a hostage situation.
The next option after a Taser is the use of Lethal force, and yes I know he died but as I have said I am 99.99% sure that cause of death will be an underlying medical condition.
At the end of the day the only reason the Police were there was because there was a man armed with a knife.
