Perhaps it is, and kudos for knowing that. Seriously, +many internet points. You can show a girl this one day, and she'll be well impressed. However, he was making a pun for the sake of amusement - chomp was a more appropriate word than champ. I don't know if he knew the correct usage of the idiom or not, but that's some special kind of PITA pedantism you've got going on there to come and clarify for us all.
