A brush cutter (think petrol strimmer but with a manly blade rather than that girly wire nonsense) has proved to be one of my better random ebay moments...

Do you actually need to get rid of the gravel? Is the garden on a slope? If so, the JCB could be used to move the gravel to help level it off?

Are you planning to completely kill the hedge (and have to replace it) or just show it who's boss? If you're going to kill it and replace it, you'll obviously need to get rid of the stumps for that too. Drilling through the stump, attaching a chain to the JCB and pulling the stumps out the ground has to earn bonus man points...

A good heavy sledge hammer / fell axe / splitting maul / hatchet / sharpening tool all pass the man test too. Use the axe to chop up the logs into smaller logs, log splitting contests are always good for a giggle over a few beers, and you can burn them on the BBQ when all the animals have been consumed...
 
the best way to do this is blatantly to cut all the trees down with axes and machetes and other dangerous things , then pay someone to clear up all the mess you have made :D

this last section has aroused me, splitting mauls and felling axes, reminds me of epic items in world of warcraft.....arse! lost man points right there!!

gravel has to go, everything has to go, need to dig down and find out how badly the tree roots have mucked up the sewer/pipework, house was a bargain so even if it has to come down we are still winning........

re brush cutter

If you get a Ryobi expandit "brush cutter"/engine set it normally comes with the strimmer head as well :)
We picked up a number of the expandit bits (plus 2 engines) as we got the first engine with a hedge trimmer and strimmer, then we needed a brush cutter and rotovator and got a great deal on a set with the rotovator+brush cutter thrown in free with an engine + small mower set (it worked out for about £10 more than the rotovator/brush cutter we got a second engine and the mower bit).


For getting out roots i think my dad uses a mattock and axe.
 
Big **** off JCB and big **** off crane to lift said JCB over your house into your garden. I actually know someone that did this so it is possible.

One other point to note about the brush cutter, don't assume the shaft (snigger) will break in two for transport if you're picking one up. I made that mistake and we ha to put the top down to get it home. Mrs Kingy wasn't best pleased about having the blade near her head blowing in the wind... :cool:

This can also be a good opportunity to get even with the postman if he has an annoying habit of waking you up at silly o'clock at the weekends.

Order anything heavy on eBay that is delivered by Royal Mail. Postie and I now have an understanding...
