Manufacturers you dont like.

Fiat. Owned an S reg Punto years ago, and it was just a terrible collection of rusting pieces of metal mashed together to make "a car". I would never EVER buy another Fiat.

I've had a Focus since then and it has been absolutely brilliant (touch wood), but I know of a few friends who wouldn't touch a Ford with a bargepole. I've had nothing but good fortune with mine and long may it continue. It's not a fast car, its not especially economical, its just a bog standard car, but it rarely breaks down as long as you look after it well enough and its perfectly comfortable.

Clio RS200? Technically even the Veyron is French :p

See I do like the hot Clios, especially the newer ones (197, 200), I could not get on with the interior or driving position of the 172/182 family though, just wrong to me although I accept they are great fun to drive....Clio V6 is awesome too, I've driven a ph1 and it was really fun, not that quick and it felt very lively, but it put a big smile on my face!

But the rest of French stuff, especially 90s and 2000s era, I absolutely cannot stand, with the exception of the hot hatches. The bog standard models are just awful - pug 206 for example, its just eugh!

Hence my struggle...I have appreciation for the good sporting french stuff despite often slightly dubious interiors and build quality (clio mk1 and mk2 172/182, 306 GTI-6) or random or ugly styling (Megane 'with the ass', Xsara VTS), but the rest seems utter dross.

Ford make the best driving 'average' cars, the Japanese makes the most reliable, but for the most part of the last 10-15 years the French have produced some very very average vehicles, even amongst their peers. Just cannot see the appeal or point in buying say, a Xsara, or a C3, or a Laguna, compared to any of their competitors, and this puts me off the brands generally.

Well with my current budget I'm not picky but I avoid anything from the older generation of French and Italian cars, mostly from friend's experiences with their reliability. Saying that my first car, Ford Focus failed on me spectacularly after only 8 months with just 80k on the clock, got rid of it for less than its alloys probably cost.

what went wrong with it?

I don't hate many brands really, I actually quite like the look of that new i40 Hyundai but then I drive an almera :P

I hate how Nissan and Toyota are not making bonkers cars any more. Things like MR2 turbos, Pulsar GTi'-r and Celica GTs. Same for most companies though I guess.

I'm not sure I settle on particular manufacturers, I just despise boring, bland, lifeless cars designed to be school run white goods affairs and shopping carts.

Focus, Pug 308, Astras, Vectras etc.

Once upon a time, even a bog standard hatchback was designed to be "fun" - if anyone remembers the 205 adverts etc. Now enjoying driving seems to be a sin that makes you an environment bashing child killer clarksonite.

stick with the theme I guess.

I don't really like VAG cars. I personally think they are too expensive for what you get and they are over hyped a bit.

I also strongly dislike their 'slammed/stanced' scene which i think throws huge amounts of fuel on that fire.

Citroen and Peugeot.

Have never ever liked Citroens and I cannot stand Peugeot because they haven't built anything I would even consider buying for the last 15 or so years. How you can build great cars like the 205 and 306Gti and then lose the plot I don't know.

That's the main problem for me, 20 years ago you could go to any brand and possibly justify a reason for liking them.

Toyota, supra, mr2, that tiny little mad gti turbo thing they did.

Citroen, were quirky, didn't rust, had engines that lasted for ever and would run on anything.

Ford had the chavtastic Essex scene with their xr3is and RS turbos and all that nonsense.
Now they pretty much all just chuck out the same soulless rubbish, just that some do it worse than others.

Audi, VW and Vauxhall.

Audi and VW because people who buy them have the illusion that they're well built and reliable. Plus I can't help but think a Skoda or Seat is pretty much the same car. Lastly the fact that the current A3 is 9 years old and still on the market selling well suggests that people who buy Audi's do so because of the badge.

I don't like Vauxhall because I would always chose the more interesting Ford equivalent.

Come to think of it, the only mainstream brands I really like are Ford, BMW, Honda, Renault, Skoda (maybe Seat) and the odd Mazda. I would always look to get one of those over the competition first.

Illusion? My A6 is built well and reliable, thanks.

That's not really "getting one over" Audi or VW is it? Seeing as they are all one company.

Vauxhall, bland, bland, bland. I've not enjoyed a single one I've owned and that's 4 of them as cheap runners for a couple of months.

Citroen/Peugeot, I've worked for Citroen so experienced a large range of their cars and the build quality is horrendous, cheap plastics and even their leather interiors, especially on the DS3 I drove are nasty places to be.

Old or new one? If it's the new one I'd understand but my objection is that it's using the Mini name and then seemingly pumped an old style Mini full of growth hormones to leave this weirdly oversized thing in its place. The Mini Clubman and Countryman are even worse - I'd struggle to call the dislike irrational though, there's just no good reason for them that I can see when other cars do the same thing better/cheaper/look better etc. I'm sure they're perfectly nice cars and fun to drive but if they were named something else I doubt I'd have any problems with them. You can lump the new Beetle into the same bracket as well but I was never very taken with the old one so I care less about it.

New one, but as iconic as the old mini is, i still wouldn't buy one, i hate small cars.

All french cars and Vauxhall, they look so bland, and they always seem to fall apart so easy.

Also Golfs, why do people rave about them so much, yes the Mk1 was good (in its day) but the modern one's are dire.

I should dislike BMW and Audi, but the cars are fine, its just the drivers are tools.

Don't like Peugeot, because I think their cars look naff.

Also glad I didn't go for a Corsa as my first car from the sounds of this topic. 90% of replies saying Vauxhall.......
