Has anyone seen this?

I watched it a few weeks back and thoughts of it still go through my mind occasionally.

I'm not too good with films with lots of torture in, hostel and saw etc, but have seen some. Saw and hostel have an almost comical and cheesy edge throughout, but martyrs i found much darker. The things that are done to the to young women trying to find martyrs is down right disturbing. But it's not just the torture, it's the way in which it is performed, they do not hate their victims but rather admire their suffering and ability to endure. There is no malice or spite behind their actions, they just follow their beliefs calmly, coldly and without mercy.

It's certainly a very serious and sobering watch, though i'm sure there are some hardcore gore fans out there that will consider the torture scenes laughable.

Anyway, it gets a thumbs up from me.

Erm, Robert you might want to add some spoilers :(

EDIT: Just read OP, the entire THREAD needs 'Spoilers' added, you don't really find out what the OP describes in his opening paragraph until about 3/4 of the way through the film, so yes, SPOILERS!! :p

Anyway, yes it's one of the most disturbing films I've seen, I agree about it not really having the 'comedy'/ entertainment factor of Saw/Hostel etc. It is in a similar style to Salo, if someone described what was happening then you might go 'Oh yeah sounds like something from Saw' but it's delivered in such a way that is very gritty and no-holds-barred, I was a bit speechless towards the end of Martyrs and yeah it freaked me out for a while afterwards, good film but definitely not one to watch with the girlfriend/recommend to other people who you don't know well, unless you want them to think you're a weirdo :D

I don't think i've written any spoilers in my post, you may not find out about the cult until later in the film, but knowing doesn't ruin the film at all. And Robert1986 you really should edit your post as it's just a massive spoiler, do you not think?

i did'nt think it was that good tbh, and agree about the shotgun part being the best, i found the fire extinguisher part in 'irreversable' to be far more disturbing

Just finished it and it's kept me up on a work night but it was well worth it.
Thanks for that.

If you liked it, check out "Inside" ("A L'Interieur") as well. It's more of a slasher/bloodfest versus the more philosophical/cerebral effect of "Martyrs", but it's masterfully crafted.

Just watched this film and while watching it thought I'd have a search on here for what people thought of it as the beginning was a little slow.

The film was great but Robert1986 your post is a massive spoiler any chance you could edit the bit about the ending out.
