Mass effect, what a ride!

I prefer ME2.

Much better combat, less annoying inventory stuff, story line just as good.

Problem with ME2 was it was much more of a shooter/simplified in comparison to ME1.
It was still a good game, but you'll probably find those who like RPGs probably prefered, whilst those who prefer shooters/action games will enjoy ME2 more.

Both are good games, but I hope ME3 strikes a better balance between the best elements of both

Ergo:
Story
RPG elements up to the level of ME1, aka more skills, things to customise
Less repetetive/overtly obvious combat setups (ME2 was a bit poor for this)
Less redundant/useless equipment (ME1 had far too much equipment you never used because I-X was a little silly, and some stuff was just cack)

Bioware are usually quite good at catering to the fans so hopefully they will get this right for the last installment in the trilogy, I'd imagine they're well aware that perhaps the game didnt strike the best balance in some areas, at least for various segments of the fanbase.

ME1, at least in terms of controls, was a much better PC port than ME2, which really did feel like a console port, which was a bit dissapointing with Bioware's heritage. ME2 felt drastically simplified in terms of controls. ME1 by contrast was very easy to pickup by anyone with at least a passing familiarity of pc games, and the buttons were all pretty much where you expected them to be, ctrl for crouch, e to use, r to reload, shift to sprint etc.

Was actually quite strange that Bioware changed that for the second one in a way, as the original ME port for PC was widely highlighted as having better controls than the Xbox version; everything worked.

I had a slight preference for ME2 over 1, at least on the combat side and for getting rid of the Mako grind.

Story and immersion wasn't a patch on 1 though, might have suffered from being no2 of a trilogy.

Which for me is what made ME1 so damn brilliant, no game has ever made me feel such a part of something so epic.

ME2 just didn't have any of those moments for me, though that could possibly be down to me having high expectation after playing the first.

I ultimately got that feeling from both games - the thing was, ME1 gave it earlier.

Before you take off for your first flight in the Normandy and you give the whole "The fate of the Universe is in our hands" speech - I got that goosebumpy feeling that only comes with great storytelling and immersion...a real feel of an epic story.

With ME2, that only really came around the time of the final battle where you choose who's fighting where.

Still, they both stand head and shoulders as the best gaming experiences I've had in a long, LONG time.

Well, i started on ME2 last night, have just finished Omega, got archangel, the veteran and the prof and i have to say... it's not gripping me like ME1 did.

The combat is a lot better i'll say that for it but i miss my inventory! i was hoping for so much more from the upgrade system than 'once you research it every gun gets it' i thought there might be some real weapon customisation, swapping bits like you can with armour.

I'm also missing the boring time i spent in lifts, or watching the normandy dropping the mako off, loading screen are so much less immersive!

The story has had its moments, seeing Tali, finding out who archangel really is (don't wanna spoil it for anyone who hasn't played it).. but this is probably more due to ME1 being so damn immersive.

I'm also liking the reactionary 'hit this button to perform this action' you get during conversations, a few of them have made me smile!

I agree. ME1 was much more epic, and the story twists had more impact.

The cover mechanics of ME2 got on my nerves after a while because it was obvious when you're about to go into combat because you'd enter an area with loads of waist high boxes/rocks/walls scattered around at specific angles.

One of my missus's friends is into RPGs be he generally preferred normal fantasy style ones like The Witcher and Baldurs Gate etc. I managed to get him to try Mass Effect and he loved it! Its still one of my favourite games as well! :)
