Massive new monitor... eye strain! recommendations/help/advice?

How far should you sit then? Surely the point of the big screen is to sit back as everything is much larger :)
No it's not, screensize tells you absolute nothing on its own about how big things look, it's all about the resolution AND the screen size... or to sum it up, pixel density.

High pixel density = everything is small
Low pixel density = everything is huge

I'm sitting 1.5/3 feet away from my 2560x1440 27", works great. Did try to strap LEDs to the back of my screen but it's not close enough to the wall to make a big difference.

Well, or put a small lamp of some kind pointed towards the wall.. You can set that at any distance from the wall without moving your screen.
There are also glasses made for screenwork/marathon gaming, that should help alleviate eye stress. Google it, although they tend to be not that cheap.

I know, but I'm talking with reference to the OP's monitor (although I didn't make it so clear) which is large but at a lower than expected resolution therefore sitting a bit more back is better.

Refresh ratio was fixed when they stopped making CRT's ;)
CRT's flicker and it becomes noticable on low refreshrates. TFT's work differently and don't flash on and off but are always on/displaying something.

Turns out that's not quite true anymore.

TFTs *do* flicker now, thanks to LED backlights using PWM to reduce the brightness.

And you can quite easily detect flicker in modern TFTs too. I recently returned a Benq GW2750HM (LED) because it hurt my eyes something crazy.

Have a look at this:

i will agree witht he brightness thing al monitors ship to dazzle it seems maybe they want people to go WOW out of the box ive got my u27 brightness on 35 and contrast on 46 anymore and i need sunshades...
