I can't understand why people get so wound up about being called "mate".

Most the time its used as a term of endearment or respect, and not because they think you are a friend.

With some people you would have thought you'd have called them a **** or something.

And 99% people who hate being called "mate" will never bring the person up on it, mainly because they know it could offend the other person, and moreso, deep down they know that they mean no offense by it and that it is a term of endearment/respect.

Some people just love to complain. It always strikes me as a sign of intolerance, in that they have no inclination to view it from your side to see what you actually mean by it, but instead resort to affront that people don't always act exactly how they'd prefer them to.

mate for someone i dont really know. plz dont laugh and nothing racist but call some of my closest friends "jew" :p private joke between us

so if i were 2 c anyone of em i would say "alright jew"

I call my main friends Dude or Mate. But anyone else a just use their name.

If i don't know their name then i just say "excuse me" or "Oi! You!!" ;)

Since starting in the job im in now nearly 2 years ago, I tend to say dude in work as I work with some South African born people, and they tend to say dude a lot.

When im at home though I will say mate.

Even though i;m from teesside where "Mate" and "Bud" are commonly used names, i hate it when people address me as such when they don't know me.
