Maximum speeds on ADSL Lines ?

Hi

I think this would be a good FAQ to go in the sticky, but I do not know the answers...

Question is, whats the maximum speed (bandwidth) that you can have ?

my 2Mb line for instance :

2Mb bandwidth (download) / 256K bandwidth (upload)
download speed MAX 240 kb/s
Upload speed MAX 30 kb/s

now I just got my 8Mb (its actualy 6Mb on the exchange)
unknown as of yet, not tested

6Mb bandwidth (download) / 384K bandwidth (upload)

is there a guide anywhere for this sort of thing ?
 
1KB = 8Kb

1000Kbps / 8 = 125KB/s

Then you've got to take in to account ~10% overheads I think, so on a 1Mbps line:

1152Kbps * 0.90 = 1036.8

1036.8 / 8 = 129.6KB/s

Of course with MaxDSL it's a bit different as you've got to take in to account the BRAS data rates
 
bandwidth, devide by 8, converts bits to bits and get you the theoretical maximum download

ie

2048kbps / 8 = 256kb/s

240kb/s + overhead = 256kb/s

thats the more complex version, 10% is an OK overhead figure but it varies with connection, usage (phase of the moon...)

Just done a bit of playing around with numbers and 15% would seem to fit in more with the expected download rates. Obviously still not a precise figure.

This would go in with all the other Max stuff, but as I've said before, I've got better things to do with my time (on top of getting called up for jury duty today :(). Feel free to start a thread and compile a load of FAQs on the subject and it'll get added.
