I have a spare PC which I'd like to turn into a media server so that I can stream movies etc to my Panasonic plasma. However the TV is not a 'smart TV' so what is the best way of doing this?

probably the wrong section for this but a little box for the tv like a roku/sky now or similar and plex on both the little box and server.

Although I didn't personally get on with plex and use serviio with a smart tv.

Engadget did a post about the now tv with plex - linky

Unfortunately SkyB knew about people pushed to use unauthorised apps on NowTV, they are not happy about it and updated NowTV latest firmware now blocked Plex and other apps.

Don't waste your time think about get slow 700MHz Raspberry Pi with access to only 122 apps from Pi store. For same price as £35 Raspberry Pi Model B, I suggest a more powerful quad core 1.8GHz Android 4.2 Mini PC 8GB stick with access to over 1 million apps from Google Play that will turn your Plasma TV into smart TV.

Wasn't aware there was a firmware update out that stopped plex working on the now tv boxes. Not had mine updated as it's not been on for a month or to but won't let it update if that's the case

These guys are all wrong.

You need an Android box. You can buy them off DinoDirect.

It's a little box with HDMI out that plugs into your TV with the android tablet OS on it. You can either connect wirelessly to your network or there is an RJ-45 port on the box too.

On the box you can set up SMB connections to your media server and stream them in full 1080p.

Mine comes with 4 USB connectors, so I have a wireless mouse and keyboard plugged in.

You can also plug in Xbox 360 controllers and play android games.

Or if you feel like it you can install an emulator, download roms and place N64 games/PS2 games.

This is the best solution for anyone with a smart or dumb TV.
