Spent a fortune on Meguiars stuff this weekend and decided to give the car a good go over.

I had the interior cleaning wipes which came free with my Evo subscription.

Gold Class Rich Leather Wipes, All Purpose Cleaner Wipes and Protectant Wipes.

These all worked really well, the leather ones took so much grub of the seats that to look at you wouldnt think was there, left them a bit slippy though!

Then for the car i bought the Smooth Surface Clay Kit, Scratch X, NXT All Metal Polysh, Hot Rims All Wheel Cleaner, Foam Applicator Pad (twin pack) Supreme Shine Microfibre cloth and Water Magnet Drying Towel.

Washed the car with turtlewax shampoo and wax which ive got a gallon of in the shed. I used the water magnet drying towel on the car which soaked the water up quickly and i didnt even need to wring or dry it for the whole car.

Used the claybar as described and was amazed about how much crud which i couldnt see but you could feel, that the claybar brought off the bodywork, especially the roof and rear spoiler.

The claybar couldnt remove one mark which seemed to be tar or something that needed some tougher work on it. But it worked as described and made my paintwork smooth all over.

I experimented using the scratch X with the foam applicator pads, seemed to work on very small scratches OK but not on larger ones, the pad also seemed to soak up a lot of the scratch X compound when trying to apply it.

I then used the Supreme Shine Microfibre cloths to buff off any scratch X and then applied the cleaner wax again using an applicator pad. This worked better than the scratch X seemed to with the pad and I applied it all over and buffed off again with the microfibre cloth.

Used Autoglym Fast Glass on the windows and mirrors, have been using this for a year or so, gives good results with just one or two quick wipes.

Used the NXT metal polish on my airbox and exhaust, worked very well but took a while to take all the dirt off the parts, applied it to the cloth and it kept coming back black after rubbing! Came up nice and shiny when i was done though.

This has given me a finish which im happy with, the cars 12 years old so has its fair share of small dings and plenty of chips to the bumper/bonnet/windscreen from motorway miles.

What i am more interested in than the finish is how well it now keeps the dirt off the car, if its easier to clean next time i do the car.

I heard that the Water Magnet towels were cack beyond belief. The rest of their stuff seems to scrub up pretty well.

Hi there

They are OK at first but after a couple of uses they do seem to get hard and do marr the paintwork.

For cloths/towels I find Sonus and Eufrew are pretty much the best, much superior to Meguiars.

Agree, sonus are quality items here

If i had to pick out of them then i would say the NXT metal polish was the best of all the products and the scratch X the worst as i couldnt really tell the difference between an area treated with scratch X and an area which i didnt, this could be because my paints too hard or the scratches i do have are too deep for the scratch X to work on them.

The claybar was good, but i would have liked it to be a little bigger to allow areas such as the bonnet and roof to be done a little quicker than was possible. I guess now i have done the car once it will be a lot quicker in future as it will stay cleaner now.

Tbh now that you have spent all that time and effort sorting the paintwork, you really will do yourself a favour by putting a decent wax on it, if you want a good hardwearing wax, get yourself a tub of collinite, one application will last absolutely months, dont bother with the megs polish or wax tbh, theres better stuff out there for the bucks!

Scratch x is a very good product but it takjes ages to work in, its great if used by machine.

I've found Megs stuff to be quite hit and miss. Didn't think much of the waffle towel or the scratch x.

I'm always wary of car care products that smell like they belong in your bathroom :p

Best megs product IMO is the Endurance Tyre Gel. Awesome stuff and an awesome smell :D

Hehe, I take it back perfumed products are marketing genius, sucking eveyone in!

I'm off to shower with some NXT "wax" - i mean shower gel :p

I hear a lot of good stuff about the Collinite wax, is there a specific one i should get for a black car?

I use #915, but theres also #476.It really is good, it lasts ages and ages, i washed my car last weekend, 5 weeks after it being applied (and 5k miles too) and it was still beading bootifully :p

Best stuff i have ever used, that said also look at the victoria,p21s,natty's blue, all around the same sort of money and pretty good, but they dont have the longevity of collinite apparently.I cba waxing my car every other week so collinite is the best for me.

None that i know off, head over to www.detailingworld.co.uk and they will point you in the right direction.

Appears to be trader only and not available on the high street. Ordered from elitecarcare.co.uk :)

Back on the topic of Meguiars stuff, i used their glass cleaner today and it was excellent.

I bought some 476 last week off an online store who also have an ebay shop.

Did a quick polish (AG SRP) on the Alfa followed by the 476, great looking finish!!

I'm having the mx5 professionally machine polished at the begining of May and if time allows he's going to do the Alfa also. Both cars suffer from swirl marks from careless washing by previous owners!! Will be good to have them sorted for the summer!
