Merge of WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram. EURGH!

Do people still use Facebook?
Yes and if you use it properly there is virtually no reason to complain about it. I see very little of what I don't want to apart from the odd advert.

I am however disappointed by the news of the merger and what it may lead to in the future.

https://zephoria.com/top-15-valuable-facebook-statistics/

Some stats on there.. in short, yes a lot of people do.

No doubt will have to have a faceache acount to use whatsapp soon then.

So will be back to imessages

Reading the BBC article it seems the opposite. They will allow cross communication of three platforms which sounds to me the backend will change to allow this otherwise they would just move it into one app.

Apart from, you know, all the data breaches, the tracking and profiling, the sharing of data with third parties, the Russian troll farm bots, election meddling and the purposeful yet surreptitious manipulation of users' emotions. Other than that kind of stuff, no complaints at all really. :D

Edit: Oh, and I just found this little nugget!
Facebook knowingly duped game-playing kids and their parents out of money [via what they called 'friendly fraud' internally, after refusing employee's objections with a reply that Facebook was about 'maximising revneue'; to the shock of no one.]

Yes I do, although I’m getting a little sick of annoying ads for Simba mattresses and silly games.

You're doing it wrong.

Install GreaseMonkey / ViolentMonkey / TamperMonkey into your browser.
Install Facebook Unsponsored script.
No more sponsored posts on FB.
Obviously use uBlock for adblocking on the rest of the internet.

Also install the following scripts:

Anti-adblocker killer
Pinterest Without Registration
Local YouTube Downloader
Amazon Price Variation (uses CamelCamelCamel)
General URL Cleaner (shortens eBay and Amazon URLs to just the domain + item number)

I know most of the above already exist as add-ons, but it is better to have as few add-ons as possible. So use Monkey as the add-on then the scripts run on top of that. Scripts are always better than add-ons.

You can thank me later :)

Delete your Facebook account using your powers under the 'GDPR'.

FTFY. :p

Dunno what's wrong with good old text messaging.

Groups and media are just better in WhatsApp and Messenger. Text messaging never evolved as networks saw ££ in their eyes at all that juicy MMSMS money. Only my mum text me the old fashioned way these days :p

afaik the best alternative is Telegram https://telegram.org/

Telegram has privacy/security issues. As I said earlier; Wire, Signal and Riot (and a few others) are considered best but even then have some compromises of usability vs security. They are at least e2e encrypted, Signal has 'sealed sender', Wire is Swiss based (Signal is American...) and Riot is decentralised. Pick your poison wisely.

Bah, why do they always mess with something that works. I bet when they integrated the app will suddenly use a load more user data and run slower.

Also they always go on about end to end encryption but what about the data while it's on your phone or being input? Facebook must get something out of this so can they log keywords while being typed in or once messages have been read, what is their angle? :p
