Metal Detectors to Become the Norm in UK Schools

Airport-style searches using metal detectors are to be installed at hundreds of English schools, namely schools in London, Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham.

Seniors, police officers and head teachers have reportedly supported the proposals, with the opinion that the efficiency of the detectors in finding knifes will outweigh any concerns regarding pupil privacy.

A Home Office spokesman said: "We are continuing to tackle knife crime through responsive policing, and prevention projects which provide diversionary activities, training, peer mentoring and education projects."

Can't se it doing much, weapons can be found everywhere and made from day to day items. If people show of with knifes, they can quite easily fahsion another weapon to show of with.. Stop fire fighting the problem and get to the cause.

Ie. punishment for both kids and parents.
 
i can see the new school day starting at 3am, so they can scan everyone. the system in my opionion will not work effedtively as kids carry too much electronic equipment on them these days.

The majority of parents would not knowingly allow their kids to carry a weapon, that does not mean their kids will not carry a weapon. No matter how much a parent drums certain things into a child the child will still have the opportunity to do what they decide when they are out of the house, I am sure even you did things that your parents would have liked you not to.
Just out of curiosity, how many children do you have?
 
ridiculious, my school has 2000 pupils no way could they get through that much considering most people arrive about 10 - 5 minutes before the bell.
 
this would be stupid though. all schoolkids carry vast quantities of metal items, like Change, Keys, Ipods, Shanks etc...

Non but my dad and friends are teachers. A lot of problems is down to parenting, especially for the trouble kids. The parents have the same attitude as the kids and threaten and assault teachers. No wonder the kids are like it.

I agree, but it isn't always the case. Your initial statement, originally, seemed somewhat sweeping. Now it doesn't :)
 
Unlike America, we won't have an armed security guard to monitor the detectors. Therefore you can safely guarantee that they'll be vandalised and out of order within a week.
 
You could stab someone with almost anything with enough of a point and plenty of force. While I'm sure it will/has happened, the current knife thing seems to be as much about image as the act.
 
How many knife attacks occur at school a year?

Can't help but think this it another pointless scheme to make it look like those in charge are doing something. But in reality penalising the innocent.
