Hi all,

Two weeks ago I bought a Toshiba 32WLT68 LCD TV and so far I have only watched two DVD's through it, as I spend a lot more time playing the 360 which looks awesome. Now with both the films I watched, Superman Returns and Miami Vice (terrible film IMHO!) I had big issues with scenes where the night sky was displayed. Instead of being black, it is just a mottled mess, like white noise, but black noise if you get what I mean. I have fiddled with all the settings and been through all the standard presets ones

I was therefore wondering if anyone else may have Miami Vice and if they could confirm how the night scenes look for them on their LCD TV's?

5:30 minutes into Miami Vice where Sonny steps out onto a balcony to make a phone call is a prime example.

I am using a Sony DVD player and the 360's player.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

i think its something to do with the filter michael mann put on the movie i think the hddvd suffers fomr the same problem, he kind of added noise for effect but it just made it look crap, im probly going to watch it on my oppo soon i'll tell you how i find it

That would be great, thanks a lot :)

Its particularly noticeable at the point I mentioned, across the nights sky and even Sonny's jacket all looking very fussy.

Cheers

Aha, thats reassuring to know. What screen are you using? I was a quite paranoid last night that I hadn't made the right choice in TV!

I don't suppose that you also have Batman Returns?

War of the Worlds is another prime example of this especially the scene(s) in the basement. I played the dvd on the Sony DVP-NS76H dvd player watching it on a Samsung LE32R74BD LCD TV connected through HDMI.

Defo the dvd at fault with the noise more so than the TV as far as I can tell.

Ok here a quite a few examples of dodgyness (artifacts, speckles and fuzzy mess) in Superman Returns. I really hope its just a poor DVD conversion which a colleague believes he did read about this DVD) and not the TV!:

0:20:00 The curtains when having conversation with Martha Kent

0:20:56 His suit when leaving the lift

0:57:30 When they turn of the lights so Lex Luther can examine the crystals.

01:10:30 / 01:11:58 / 01:12:25 / 01:12:42 Superman taking Lois Lane for a ride in the night sky

01:57:05 Lois Lane removing the Kryptonite shard from Superman in the Sea Plane

02:16:30 The ceiling of the kids room (Supermans son?)

However, loads of other parts of the film where scrolling blacks are seen are fine? Such as the very end of the film at 02:20:25.

If anyone can confirm how these sections look for them on their TV's I would be really grateful. I don't want to return this TV if its not really at fault!

Are all these Films Region 2... as I have Region 3 version of most of these (not Miami Vice... Heard it was Crap!!) and just playing them on my ageing Panasonic DVD-RV60 (Will be changing this soon for a DV-696AV-s or a BR/HD combi when released!!) RGB (Scart) to my Sagem 32"LCD the Blacks are BLACK with no noise!!... (that I can see!!).

But I do have a few Region 2 Films that the Black Levels are Crap, stuff moves around in a sort of disjointed way from other parts of the objects: eg on Faces in Dark scenes the Noses seem to be sort of floating!!

Could just be the Region 2/PAL transfer of the films!... as my Region 1 and 3/NTSC transfers are Crispy and the Black Levels are un-noisy!!... :)

Yep War of the Worlds and Miami Vice both use a similar "look", I can remember watching Miami Vice at the Cinema and remarking to a friend "is there something wrong with the projection, it looks ****".

I don't unfortunately. I will try and pull out some other DVD's tonight or perhaps go and rent a Star Wars movie, as I imagine that should have plenty of blacks!

If anyone does have Superman Returns though and can check the scenes I have quoted above that would be great.
