You're almost 30 though so while facebook was just a fad and gimmick for your age it's obsessively used by people 10 years younger. Fortunately I grew up where mobile phones were only just becoming feasible for a kid to own so if I wanted to talk to a mate I had to go round to his house and knock on the door, and when I did get a phone it was person to person communication rather than posting news for all to hear this means I am less dependent on it than some but even I use it at least once a week. If it vanished I don't suppose I would be too upset.
It's one of the reasons Facebook isn't worth what people say it is. Facebook's core users are adolescents, and they are notoriously hard to advertise to as they are only interested in trends and fashions. No matter how much you advertise to them, if you're not cool you're not going to sell stuff. In a few years when advertisers have some solid figures on sales made from Facebook advertising they'll realise it's not worth it and Facebook will go down the pan.
Why didn't they just call it social?

Why not wait until they have some novel interface concept, instead of making a Facebook clone and hope people prefer the clone?

Myspace also has an option to sign in via facebook now.
I wouldn't hold your breath for one either given it's a Microsoft product. WP8 & W8 will most likely have some kind of direct link with it.

Oh the irony of not reading what it is. A social site does not mean its a Facebook copy. It's not even imbed at the masses and is administered by microsfofts research department.
