Microsoft launches their own social network

That's good, they aren't trying to.

Can you change op title.

It's still a social network is it not? Although I've not looked into it very far, it looks like anything you can do on "so.cl", you could already do on Facebook (or a discussion forum such as this infact :p).
Title is fine imo.

Why does Microsoft seem to be about 10 steps behind everybody else nowadays.

Zune player after the success of Ipod.
Bing trying to rival Google.
Games for Windows which aims to emulate Steam
Windows 8 trying to get on board the whole tablet/touchscreen phenomenon.

And whatever happened to Windows Mobile, they could have cornered that area of the Smartphone market but has now disappeared.

Because they were half-assed clones of already well established products/services.

I would say that this has a chance if MS can differentiate it enough from existing services with good, worthwhile features and prove it's worth. This is the problem with Google+; other than the 'circles' method of grouping your contacts, it's basically a Twitter clone with a better UI and offers nothing of significant value.

Got caught napping (massively) and rather than rushing something out, made win8, which is far more advanced than any of the oppositions. They did the same with IE, snoozing and then shocked when over taken and with hotmail. But then they come back and release something awesome.

You're the exception when it comes to Facebook users. Most are active and most log in every day. What other website can say that?

Firefly.net before MS bought and ruined it within the space of a fortnight!

Went from 2million+ members to negligble numbers (sub 1000) within that timeframe because they introduced the "passport" that later became the MSN stuff. It was horrible.

This was in ~1997.

socl, in IRC days meant "seating on the chair laughing"

I think that sums it up nicely?

Besides, for this to be "experimental social search network", Bing, as a search engine, would have to be first capable of finding anything.

It's not supposed to be a social network like Facebook or Google+, it's not even a "real" product. It's a MS labs experiment, there's a bunch of MS services from fuse labs that will never see the light of day, they're mainly used as part of research and to test aspects of technology parts of which might get used eventually in other products like docs.com and spindex. This is just another one of them.

Stuff to look at and play with at Fuse labs projects (Bing twitter maps is interesting for 5 mins in a strange stalker sort of way :) )

Looking at the FAQ it's described as:

What is So.cl?
So.cl (pronounced "social") is an experimental research project, developed by Microsoft’s FUSE Labs, focused on exploring the possibilities of social search for the purpose of learning.

*So.cl combines social networking and search, to help people find and share interesting web pages in the way students do when they work together.
*So.cl helps you create rich posts, by assembling montages of visual web content.
*To encourage interaction and collaboration, So.cl provides rich media sharing, and real time sharing of videos via "video parties."

We expect students to continue using products such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other existing social networks, as well as Bing, Google and other search tools. We hope to encourage students to reimagine how our everyday communication and learning tools can be improved, by researching, learning and sharing in their everyday lives.
