Microsoft has finally agreed to start complying with a European Commission 2004 anti-monopoly ruling against it.

Does this mean that Linux will soon have Direct X ??
If so then YAY !!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll never have to reboot my pc again :D

I seem to remember this had something to do with Media Player, of all things... but can't remember where I saw that cause this case has been dragging on for so long I've forgotten the details.

Wine == DirectX for linux, its a compatibility layer and not a emulator after all!

BUT if Microsoft helped develop wine further, that would be a big +

WINE only supports DX7 though. And I can't see MS helping Linux to run DX9. It would put Linux in direct competition with Windows.

I'm a bit of an MS fanboy, but it would be excellent news if this extended to DirectX. If there were comparable implementations of DirectX on Linux and OSX then it would be fairly trivial to make games compatible with all 3. It would mean nearly all new PC games would work on all of them.

Don't get me wrong, I would love for Linux to be able to run DirectX - preferably in the Kernel rather than Wine.

I'd like to play some of the new games but I prefer using Linux, and it is such a hassle booting into Windows then all the way back into Linux.

I suppose I could get a gaming laptop and hook it up to my widescreen monitor, but God knows I am too tight for that :p

The European Commission said Microsoft will now charge a one-time fee of 10,000 euros to firms that want "complete and accurate" technical information on Windows software.

So i might just be the GUI and the backend stuff of windozs, i do hope that they get DirectX on linux, i'm just toooo lazy for either pay for Wine to be build for me or build it my self.....

Don't get me wrong i think Windozs was/is amzing how it works so well with all diffrent types of hardware/software,
it's just they have kinda stopped dead in the water, i mean linux and mac os had the same effects as windozs years before ( XGL )

That would not make anything any different really... Cos all 3 and indeed many other computer types, run OpenGL and I personally feel that OGL is or rather was better than DirectX.

Yes but if a game is written to use DirectX, it's a fair bit of work re coding it to use OpenGL. Since these days most games use DirectX, it would mean a lot more games would come out on Linux if they could essentially flip a switch and make a Linux version, rather than having to rewrite all the rendering code to use OpenGL.
