'LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile , Research) on Wednesday said it expects to have shipped more than 10 million Xbox 360 video game consoles to retailers by the end of calendar 2006.

"This holiday, we expect to have sold in excess of 10 million units worldwide," a Microsoft spokeswoman said.

That "sold" number refers to units "sold into retail," which refers to units in transit, units sitting in store inventories and machines sold to consumers.

The Xbox 360 debuted in November 2005, roughly a year ahead of machines from rivals Sony Corp. (6758.T: Quote, NEWS , Research)(SNE.N: Quote, Profile , Research) and Nintendo Co. Ltd. (7974.OS: Quote, NEWS , Research), whose PlayStation 3 and Wii consoles went on sale in the United States last month.

Microsoft has previously forecast global shipments of 10 million by the end of 2006, as well as shipments of 13 million by 15 million by the end of its 2007 fiscal year that ends June 30. The company's latest Xbox 360 shipment count stands at around 6 million units.

Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Chris Liddell spoke at a Nasdaq investor conference in London on Tuesday and his accompanying power point presentation included a slide showing the Xbox 360 outpacing the original Xbox, which launched in November 2001.

That presentation, at http://www.microsoft.com/msft/events/default.mspx, showed Microsoft had shipped more than 5.7 million Xbox 360 units in the three quarters following the launch period, compared with 4.7 million Xbox units in the same post-debut time frame.

The world's biggest software maker offered no further updates.

Microsoft shares were off 21 cents to $28.92 in late Nasdaq trade.'

They said they were going to hit 10m by the time the PS3 launched, so they are a little behind that, but if they get 10m before 2007 thats still damn nice.

Bet they are hoping on a lack of Wiis too, as if people cant get the PS3 or the Wii, they might fall back to the 360.

Sure Sony will eat that difference up pretty quickly though.

not if they cant suply them they'll never catch up they gotta spees up the building process if they want to get close to catching up .

So they've got 4 million consoles to go in 3 weeks? Blimey. I think that's a bit of a tall order even with Xmas.
Very tall order! Especially if Nintendo can keep up the stock of Wiis.

Obviously, Which is the problem. Not only do they have the Bluray problem working against them, But the industry standard fault line on the Cell processors.
Something like 70% arent used and deemed faulty if they don't meet standards?

I think, Like with the 360 in the beginning, Things will be slow and costly.

But efficiency will pick up, and costs will go down, and profits will be seen in the future. Like with the 360.

Guys remmember they are saying not sales to consumer, but sales to companies.

OcUK buying say 100 would count, they are not worried if they all sit in their warehouse. :p

Not a good representation of how many they wish to sell, but they certainly want to keep the shops full of stock so when the Wii is sold out the parents buy a Core or maybe a Premium.

Only £20 difference between a Wii and a Core, most 'kids' will not be wanting online play with the live sub anyway.

They said they had sold 6 million in september or october, so its very feasible. I remember reading somewhere that 3.2 million consoles were sold in november in america and the xbox 360 got the majority of tghe sales.

Yeah Yewen makes a good point, its not how many 360's in peoples homes, just that have been brought up ready for people to buy

And Sony will catch that number up, just from the brand itself, people will buy a "Sony PS3" rather than a 360

Still its good that Microsoft got to 10mill now, as it would have been a longer time to reach had Sony released there console earlier

Where did you get 4 million from? On nextgenwars.com it says they've almost hit 8 million, and with the xmas period hotting up I can see them shifting 2 million by new year.

Not such a tall order when you now look at the amount of countries its now selling in. Sure the wii will sell more than the PS3 but X360 could still be market leader over Christmas period, couldnt it damn well deserves too with the great games line up anyways...

Gess if they dont make it they sure wont be that far off including the 38 they sell in Japan this winter. ;)

Blue Dragon sold 40,000 units so thats not too bad for its first day, considering its Japan.

The holiday period always sees an upturn in sales and as others that said, the supply shortage of PS3's will help MS and Nintendo greatly.
