Might Have Made a Bad Choice... Bottleneck...

I would say just get a 3770 for now. Even a non-K, which go for around £110 on Ebay. Saves you a system overhaul for another while. Even a 3770K at £180 is not bad value at all. Get a small overclock on that sucker and it's still a very good CPU.

BF1 likes cores/threads, so it will run a hell of a lot better on a 3770 than even an overclocked i5-2500K. Amazingly even 1st gen i7 from 2009 handles BF1 relatively OK, I had an i7-860 for a bit and even at stock (Dell machine, so couldn't overclock) I played a lot of BF1 without any real issue (obviously there were some drops but nothing catastrophic, which is amazing for an 8 year old CPU!).

Both the motherboard and CPU are both very good value for money - cpu is the best price performance that we have seen in years. I would verify with some of the RAM gurus about that the kit you have chosen is the correct one for the job.

So, I have come to a decision to solve my self-inflicted quandary. Now is the time for an upgrade and this is my plan:

I simply cannot be bothered waiting for Coffee Lake or Ice Lake, and to be honest, I fancy giving some business to the competition.

You also have the option of dropping in the newer generation Zen 2 and maybe Zen3 7nm chips when they are released, if you need the extra performance :).

Absolutely - I am actually quite excited to be changing from Intel (Q6600 [2007], and then 2500K [2012]) to AMD. I had an Athlon 64 3400+ [2004] before the Q6600. I have no particular affinity for either, I just want the best price/performance with some longevity and it's nice to see AMD might provide that this time around. The 2500K has been a beast though. I can't believe it's been nearly 5 years.
Yeah my cpu before my current i5, was a Phenom II x2 2core which cost me about £60 quid back in 2009, I got lucky and was able to unlock the extra 2 cores to make it a quad. Amazing cpu for the money, I still have it in it's box :).

Anyway good luck and I'll look forward to see how you get on with it. Part of wishes I brought a 1600, but I'll stand firm and wait for Zen 2.

Just so you know that RAM hasnt been Samsung B Die for a long time. Not that it makes a difference to what you are seeing.

GTA V also suffers from microstutters on most systems.

Have you checked it isn't the hard drive and the loading of textures?

Do you have a thread where you went through the testing? I was gonna say if you've checked using CPU-Z to see exactly what speed the processor is running at.

I get 100-144 fps in bf1 at 1080p so it sounds like something is wrong somewhere. You have been through a sensible check list.

When in bf1 and fps drops go straight into task manager and see what else is using cpu. I had to disable superfetch which can cripple bf1 performance. Also disabled all game mode / dvr settings and disabled the windows update option that allows other people to get windows updates from your machine. You may have other things running in the background causing issues.

Another tip is update av before launching any games, av updating mid game will cripple performance until it has finished.

Also monitor temps / usage on cpu/ Gpu in game, bf1 is a good test for this. If your cpu cooler is not fitted properly you could have an over heating throttling issue.
