Mileage discrepancies after HPI check - advice ?

Guys I'm after a cheap run around for fishing, dogs , so just a cheap utility vehicle.

I've found a Citroen Berlingo Multispace thats seems to be clean and cheap enough and I'm off to look at it later on , I ran an hpj report on it and it confirmed along the MOT history that it has a milage discrepancy on it ? It has been advertised as a full service history car with 1 owner. Obviously I'll be asking a comparison on the years in question.

Now for 3k I'm not overly fussed and will base my decision on condition ect , its obviously bargaining power over price. However its effectively a car that will sit on the drive and be used maybe 10 times a year?

Guys advice please:

1. Could this be incorrect?

2. What do I need to be wary of ?

3. Anyone challenged someone selling a vehicle with a mileage discrepancy and what reply did you get ? This is a used car dealer I'm buying from VAT registered.

Cheers

Cheers Jon , I assume you know this from experience?

Can I get this corrected at all ?
Yup, I’m guilty of doing it myself when entering mileage and not noticing the odo was in KM’s.
As said the MOT system queries such a jump in mileage and prompts to check again.
The MOT tester can correct the mileage after inputting the results but not after another test has been carried out.
You could contact the DVSA but I wouldn’t hold your breath as to getting it changed (they’ll just put it down to tester error and do nothing).

Cheers bud ,Yes about what i expected lol.

It's one of those take the vehicles on face value and at 3k I'm happy to do so given its a 1 owner full history car.

Could it be that it's been being done in Km rather than Miles or vice versa?

126,798 miles then it becomes 81,777 miles or 131,607km which seems to follow on.

Definitely seems the most likely explanation, looking at the history, it's done a consistent 8-10k/year, followed by 50k in 2019?!

Ignoring the 2 "wrong" readings, the increase seems to follow the previous usage (accounting for a reduction over 2020/2021 due to COVID restrictions)

Passably had a second hand instrument cluster fitted ?
cant the speedo takes the highest mileage between bsi and clocks so if speedo with lower mileage it would take the bsi to correct and vica versa.
as said km input most likely.
my old 2004 focus used to be father in laws has a mileage difference only a couple of thousand, strange as it occurred about 3 years before he died and the car was being picked up and moted only by the same garage.
incidently they took nearly 2 grand off him for timing belt services etc despite the only mileage being too and from there garage....(apart from the mileage going down and then coming up the next year.).
when i asked them about it all i got was happens , cant rectify it and well he authorised the work, i would have done the work myself if i hadnt been in hospital at the time but hey ho.

Thanks for the help guys .

Purchased the car at £2800 . So i might write to DVLA and see if they will correrect it ( wont hold my breathe ) , now having the V5 slip I managed to see where it has been MOT'D all its life ? Would you belive its had every single MOT all 10 of them all done at the same garage along with a service at the same time ! So its a one owner full service history vehicle !

A few niggles nothing major to sort out but looks like im happy - cheap run around utility vehicle for the dogs , dump runs and fishing ect .

for a car of that value which by the sounds of it will be worthless when you get rid so not really an issue in this case.....

however that is kind of scary how easy it is for someone to accidentally do something to potentially ruin any 2nd hand value of the car. I know for instance when buying my ipace if I noticed such a think I would likely walk away just due to the hassle.

I nearly lost a trade in of my old fiat coupe (and thus would have missed out ona fantastic clean nissan 350z because DVLA / insurance (or who ever it is who writes off cars) put the wrong details in and.accidentally wrote off my new fiat coupe rather than my old one.****

this only came to light years later when I came to sell . could have cost me a lot.
(I guess the guy who put my actual written off car back on the road did ok out of it however as that car likely would not have shown up as a previous write off)

**** note nothing illegal as the written off was was fixed and put back on the road, it's just the cat N or what ever it is was put on the new car not the old one.
