Was just watching the footage on Sky. Apparently a couple of suicide explosions and maybe 4 militants on the loose in the complex. Some civilians are being escorted out with armed support but many are feared to be trapped in rooms at the moment with reports that the militants are working their way through the Hotel.

Not that they were in a great place but looks like things across that central belt of Africa are gonna get worse before they get better - lots of (more than usual) unrest at the moment across DRC and Gambon, etc.

What's the difference between a militant group and terrorist group ?

Heh, google always has an answer!

Even though the terms are often used interchangeably, it does seem there are some nuanced differences, though plenty of overlap

Some of the differences between militants and terrorists are:

> All terrorists are militants, but not all militants are terrorists;

> Terrorism is carried out by non-governmental groups that do not wear uniforms. However, members of militants usually wear uniforms, identifying insignia or militia – coloured clothes;

> Terrorists resort to physical violence. They utilise terror as a means of coercion and use violence as a necessary means of attaining their political, religious or ideological goals, thereby causing harm and death to innocent people and maximum damage to property. Militants may or may not actively engage in physical violence, but they are certainly very aggressive verbally or use verbal violence to achieve their desired goals, as undoubtedly, they feel themselves in “war mode”;

> Terrorists have no regard for humankind and, usually target civilians, instil fear and psychological effect on them in order to gain the attention of the authorities. As terrorist organisations, they will commit violent acts by murdering civilians, scholars, religious leaders and sanctioning of extortion and demanding ransom.

On the contrary, militants usually do not resort to harming civilians to champion their cause but instead use confrontational or violent methods against the establishment in support of a political or social cause. For example militants may choose to rebel and use armed aggression for a country’s liberation; and

> Where both terms converge is when militants find they have no recourse to achieve their goals and then they resort to terrorism if their needs are not met, thereby transforming themselves into a terrorist group.

Spent a lot of time in Kenya, mainly Nairobi but also out in the sticks and it's a huge shame to see this sort of problem being spread by the failed state that is Somalia.

That's saddest part about Africa.

When one country begins to enjoy something resembling stability/peace their neighbor sends their trash over the border to ruin the party....

You need to stop attacking peoples comments so aggressively. You’re coming across as a very angry individual lately and it adds nothing to a discussion.

When the comment deserves aggression for being either utterly wrong or detestable, yet i'll waste my time making a fruitless post about it. What does "Africa is a failed continent" add to the discussion? other than some implicit racism.

It's not even talking about the specific region, the peoples involved (there are thousands of tribes, peoples and what have you) or the political situation. It's just a vague "lol africa" comment that i have a duty to call out.

Nigeria and Kenya are growing behemoths of success, sure it could be better if not for the harsh conditions in Africa, but i still think it should be lauded instead of calling them a failure.
