I need some urgent opinions:

I'm travelling to Mexico from 27 June till 12 July, my passport expires 10th December this year.

Travel agent advised a minimum of 6 months passport validity on the date of arrival in Mexico. In my case that would be 5 months and 2 weeks...

Mexican embassy told me it would probably be "ok" but they couldn't guarantee it 100%.

Can anyone give me any further advise on this? I don't want to renew my passport if I don't need to.

Your going to have to renew it in december anyway

I'd say you will probably be fine, as long as you can prove your leaving again pretty soon...

Well my point is why renew my passport when it's still valid? Why pay double for half a year? Also I have an EU passport so that will mean taking time off work queing op at the embassy....

Becuase legally speaking, for the purposes of your trip, it's invalid.

Why are you paying double? Surely you are just paying 6 months early?

Also I have an EU passport so that will mean taking time off work queing op at the embassy....

Diddums.

Ehm.. I don't understand this logic. For the duration of my holiday my passport is valid, so what's the problem?

Take it up with the Mexicans, its their country after all

They can't give me a definative answer. That's why i'm asking for opinions from people here, maybe someone who has been in the same situation or has experiencing travelling there under the same circumstances?

At the end of the day you have no guarantee that your passport will be regarded as being valid when you arrive.

Only the say so of someone on the phone, thousands of miles away.

So, you have two choices ... renew your passport, and have a very comfortable flight over.

Don't renew your passport, take a risk, and have a not so comfortable flight over. :)

I know which I would pick.

If Mexico states it must be 6 months then it needs to be 6 months not a day less.

I know for a fact I'd not like to take any chances when flying international that a country "might" let me in.

Renew your passport, I think they just stick the unused bit on a new one so you won't loose out anyway.

Or wave a few US dollars around when you get there if its anything like Tijuana :D

Look seriously just save yourself the grief and get the passport renewed. At some point you will have to get it renewed anyways so whether you do it now or in Dec isnt the point. The point is that Mexico could and have every right to refuse you entry should your passport not be valid according to their rules.

If Mexico says 6 mths then id go with that and not take the chance of being refused entry into their country.

I have seen people be denied boarding for having a passport with only a few days under 6 months left on them so I would certainly say that it is not worth taking the risk. Get it renewed.

I hear you all, but another problem is, which I've just realized 1 minute ago, is that i will need to travel to europe in 2 weeks time for a weekend, so obviously i'm going to need my passport then.

It's all been arranged last-minute and i not very well planned, but I'm trying to find solutions not saying "you should have done this and that".

If i renew my passport, i won't be able to travel in 2 weeks time, and this is as important to me as taking the holiday in 5 weeks. Also a passport renewal takes up to 4 weeks in my case.....

You phoned them up, the Mexican embassy said they couldn't guarantee your entry, what more info do you need?
So when the immigration officer refuses your passport you are going to tell him "Oh, members on a forum in England called Overclockers said that it's alright for you to let me into your country" ???
Think about the uncertainty, money, time wasted on the flight, the humiliation of being refused entry. If you're trying to save a few bobs then it's not worth it, at all.

Can't you get it done on the day at your embassy? If not some coutries offer an expedited service for an aditional fee. Phone them up and explain the situation and see what they say :)

Case of you can't have your cake and eat it.

Looks like you will have to decide which holiday is more important.

Go away in two weeks with no worries whatsoever, then return and risk the holiday to Mexico, where you may or may not be allowed entry.

Or, not go in two weeks, renew your passport and goto Mexico in six weeks.

Does it definitely take 4 weeks for an EU Passport? ... I know for a British one you can visit a passport centre and for the right amount of £££ get a passport the same day, or at least within 48 hours.

You've come up against a wall. You have two choices:

a) Find a way around the wall
b) Sit and whinge, moan cry and rant about why the wall is there.

One is loads less hassle than the other.
