I have 2x512MB of Crucial, paired for dual channel.

My motherboard has 4 DDR slots, as two pairs.

I'm going to get another 2x512MB.

If I get some from a different manufacturer, what are the chances of dual channel working? One pair from one manufacturer, another pair from a different manufacturer.

It seems to be hit and miss with this. If you do go for another manufacturer, make sure its timings and speed is exactly the same

That's what I thought. The m/b manufacturer is careful to cover itself by saying that dual channel with 4 sticks only works with matching sticks from the same manufacturer, so they must think it's hit or miss too.

I think I'll just eat the extra cost and buy some new Crucial DDR. It would be a poor saving if dual channel didn't work.

With memory prices at the moment you may aswell just get some brand new 2gb set, as the difference between 2x 512 and 2x 1024 is so little + you can sell the other stuff

2x512 costs £37.59. 2x1024 costs £70.49. I might or might not be able to sell the 2x512 I have now. Why bother to have 2x1GB instead of 4x512MB in a machine I'm just keeping moderately capable for a while longer?
