Looking at picking up a mk1 Toyota Yaris for me and the girlfriend soon and just looking for your thoughts and preferably your first hand experience on them if possible?

It's the 1l engine that we're looking for and I'm interested in real world mpg figures and motorway capability. I've never actually sat in a Yaris before but we're going to view one tomorrow, is there anything to look out for specifically?

Reg, Mileage? If you can try get a 1.3L unless it is her first car. I've just bought a Tsport as my first car, for me it's a good car. Parts are easy to source and cheap, and it's roomy inside if you go for the 5dr version. It's an excellent first car, ie; as a runabout.

Mileage wise, my 1.5L took £50 Shell Vpower for full tank, bit of fast and normal driving gave around 36MPG, still had half a tank coming to leeds from london. Can't go wrong with those cars, but the standard models do look a bit naff.

Very good little cars, the missus had one as her first car.

Her's was a 1.0 and it was abit underpowered but the 1.3 zips along quite nicely so i'd recomend looking out for one of them ideally, she used to average about 50 mpg out of the 1.0 which was pretty good really.

starting to look a tad dated inside now but i did really love the digital display for speed and revs!

Yep as far as first cars or small cars go, you can do a lot, lot worse. They're very good for what they are in my opinion

My sis has a 04 plate 1.0 T3 cracking car tbh, completely abused, but fortunately on for 6k a year. They seem relatively well kitted out for a small car/age.

I'd go for a facelift model, which is 03 onwards iirc.

But they are quite a bit more expensive than their competitors, and parts are expensive and hard to source from 3rd parties, but they simply dont break so thats not all bad!

Down side is the handling, I know its a small car, but god its dull, i'd rather have a Fiesta, or even a bleeding corsa and pocket the change!

You'll have fun sourcing bits for the Tsport, pretty rare model, brakes and simple service stuff is fine, but its the bigger stuff that costs you, same for most jap stuff, hardly any pattern parts exist, and the ones that do are naff quality.

As others have said, the 1.3 will be much better. My mom has had three of them since they first arrived in the UK and not had a single problem (if you exclude my dad putting petrol in a diesel car).

Mate of mine had a Y plate T-sport which was excellent fun after it was lowered a little. Cracking little city car, although it was a little noisy on the motorway.

We had a MK1 1.0S which is the four pot one and the one to go for IMO. They are relatively nippy for what they are and incredibly economical - we averaged 42MPG and it was ragged everywhere.

Extremely reliable, in three years this car required nothing other than normal maintenance - servicing, disks, pads and tyres.

We also did over 1000 miles down to France in it after the Corrado we were supposed to take broke down the day before we were due to set off. It will happily sit at 80-90MPH, its just a little noisy as its screaming away at 90MPH.

Not sure I agree with the handling point above; for a generic mini hatchback it was actually really quite nimble and chuckable.

My only real gripe with the car is that the seats were horrible - not that I suppose that the competition is much better.

Well, we're going to look at an '02 reg, 1.0 Colour Collection tomorrow morning, luckily it's only around the corner from us but even so, I hope it's not a wasted journey.

I dread to think what a 1l engine will feel like to drive, although I suppose having driven a 125cc scooter for the past 8 months that anything will feel quicker.

I dont like the handling on them at all, its wooly and dull to drive, I like small cars even crap ones like the KA and they are far more 'fun' to drive!

Oh and 4k to insure a Yaris  jeez thats just stupid.

My sister has had one for 3 yrs now, It's her first car (The 1.3 T-spirit)

handling wise it's not the best... It's proved to be reliable as it's still working and she hasn't serviced it in the whole time she has owned it!!! (women don't listen)

Motorway won't be all that fun in it tbh, MPG you are looking at high 30's to low 40's if you go for a 1.3 instead.

Things to look out for are pretty much the same as all other cars really. I know my sisters had a problem with the brakes binding but I sorted that out with some copper grease and new pads, All pretty standard really.

Got 1.3 SR 02 plate and owned it for 4 years, cheap to run (tax, insurance, petrol) only thing I have replaced in 4 years is wiper blades and the battery.

My wife has an 05 plate 5 door T Sport, been a really nice little car.

Reasonably fun to drive, been cheap-ish to run, actually like how it looks too :)

My cousin has been an AA man for at least 35 years and when my daughter asked him for a reliable small car he suggested Toyota Yaris or Honda something because him and his colleagues hardly come across them.

Replaced the gf's Fiesta 1.25 with a Yaris 1.0, she really likes it, says she feels a lot higher up in the Yaris, but it's a nice little run around. Nicer to drive than the Corsa 1.0 and Corsa 1.2 that my parents/brother have

Whilst it's not really a deciding factor, it has a chain instead of a timing belt, so in theory, shouldn't need changing at all during the life of the car.

She's getting high 40's mpg from it

Christ yeah I forgot about the seating position, it's like being in a 4x4. I'm not a tall guy at all but my head always rubs on the roof when driving :p
