ok guys i know main agent servicing is dear but my local VWAG group have quoted me £450 to replace my cambelt and tensioners .

Anyone had the above job done by an idependant garage and how much did it cost you ?

I'd expect an independant to be around half that...iirc the cambelt kit is pretty expensive for the TDi though, i think we usually fit genuine VW as they are cheaper than 3rd most the time...
:)

I'm no MkIV Golf expert, but I seem to remember there being something silly about the cambelt replacement on the 1.9 TDI engines. The entire front of the car has to come off, or the engine has to be dropped down off it's mounts. Something like that.

If that's the case, £450 isn't totally extortionate. You're probably looking at £300-£350 at an indy garage.

The front comes out on an Audi A4 mate, and all lifts forward on a Passat. And as for the engine mounting being removed...you need to do that on virtually everything fwd that has a belt as the belt tends to run around it...

Hehe, not if it's properly designed. No engine mount through the middle of my old Cav cambelt. Honda though put a mount right in the middle of the thing. Grr!

I do remember there being something silly about the front of the car with the 1.9TDI - didn't remember it was the A4 as opposed to the Golf though.

Get it done by a main dealer. I had done by an independent garage and 2 years later it started to squeal and I had to pay a VW dealer £468 to do it again. VW said that if they had fitted it and then it had packed up that soon they would have done it under warranty. I suppose they would say that though....

I've been ringing around for quotes on a cambelt/tensioners/waterpump change this week. VAG garages wanted to charge between £400 and £720 (£720, lol, they didn't like me laughing at them).

Got it booked into an indy tomorrow for £288.

yup the A4 needs the slam panel removed and the radiator and aircon gubbins unbolted and pulled forward to do a belt change

its a PIA and i'm just after doing one :)

edit

Audi main dealer were cheapest for timing belt kit so check the prices
