'Modding' your car?

Just wondering about the general 'modding scene'. I've seen many-a-post where people have spent hours and hours adapting/upgrading their car and the outcome is usually stunning. But just wondering, surely it's possible to hand the keys over to a garge and they 'mod' it for you? Or is that not possible/quite rare in the UK?

'Modding' is a bit vague, what exactly do you want to do?

For external appearance, a bodyshop will be happy to sort you out, and any garage will be able to fit most performance parts for you.

I don't even own a car yet, just being random.

Where are these 'bodyshops'? As i have never seen them before.
