I was asked by a friend to build up a photography portfolio for her, I didn't have any experience of taking these type of pictures but we gave it a shot anyway. It certainly helps that she is quite photogenic.
These are just a select few, there are more but these are a handfull of the best.

So what are people's thoughts, they were taken with a Canon S3IS.

These shots are good, the first one is a little blown out in my opinion, maybe have a little play with the exposure?

Talk to her about what sort of shots she would like, maybe hire out a studio for an afternoon and get pictures of her in different clothes/poses to show what she can do.

Hope that helps :)

You nailed it with the last one, well done!

Agree with whats been said above. Depending on the type of photos she wants at the end maybe tell her to have a hunt on the net for poses she likes, print some off and take them along to the shoot.

She can practise some in the mirror at home before hand though to help.

Here's some examples I use when shooting new models, gives them an idea of what can be done with different lighting, clothing etc

Thanks it all makes sense, there were a couple of other shoots we did that didn't really work out, the theme seems to be her choosing the clothing and me choosing the location. Good advice with the poses though too since there is a couple of other people wanting similar things now that they have seen these, I'm going to use it as a good opportunity to learn and improve. Very temping excuse to buy a 350D too :p .

Good stuff!

The main thing to do is have fun, both you and the model. I get a lot of girls who have never been in front of the camera before and they are naturally nervous and unsure of what to do but it all works out fine usually :)

Here's the latest shoot I did last week:

And put together a short video of us all in the studio :

Kind regards,

Ah the wonderful orange glow of fake tan :D Nice pics! I've always struggled with people photography.

@OP I like what you have done so far - I think the 5th one is the best out of the set - mostly for what Robert said - it has a feminine appeal to it.
Number 2 is the other one that I like - the hair has a nice framing effect. I think they could also live with been a little warmer - not much more but just a little - gain a bit of colour depth.

She was actually just back from 2 weeks in Spain - which makes a change for a model to have a real one :D

Good shots I must say, tho I have an issue with the second last one. What a bone headed, stupid, dangerous place to take a photo! Right next to platforms too! What would you have done if a train came at speed? or worse still two at once!? Do you know linespeed? Do you know if there are any non stop trains about to come through at speed? Fair enough if it is a preserved line and you know for sure there is definately nothing coming or have permission to be there but shots like that only encourage people to do something similar on very dangerous lines! What is it about fashon photos and railways? It's not big or clever!
Sorry to be pedantic but I work on the railway and this sort of stupidity really makes me boil!

REally like the first and the last one. The last one as already mentioned as she looks very feminine.. The first one because of the location! Maybe if she is not satnding on the trolly?! Hmmm... Just a thought...
But very well done!

Don't know if this has been mentioned before as I don't have time to read all the other replies, but maybe try and get her to experiment with different facial expressions as well. The last 3 look very "pouty", which is great as long as it doesn't look like they're doing it on purpose. Get some of her laughing and not looking at the camera, maybe for real (take them without her knowing) or fake if need be. That kind of thing anyway! Apart from the pouting I really like them :)

Really liking all those shots, especially 2 & 4.

Also, as it has not been said already, (but I am sure it has been thought once or twice), she is one seriously good looking young lady.

It was Nene Valley Railway, which was not in use at the time that the pictures were being taken, we made certain of that, please dont assume that I'm ignorant of the dangers of railways, I'm not 5 years old.

On a lighter note there were some with different poses, I'll see what others I can find to post. Thanks for all the advice so far, its been really constructive and since I should have a couple more shoots of different people and a continuation of hers coming soon I should be able to put them into practice. Yeah shes very pretty and a really cool person too, the second photo shoot was a good laugh, but she wasn't happy with the pictures, the one shown was called "urban", the second one was "crazy" which involved being in the woods at dusk in the rain in a bikini, not a evening I will forget.

Anyway, here are a few more:
