I am thinking of having a bit of a re-invention of the way I dress at work over the new year. I have always been a shirt and smart trousers guy at work, we aren't forced to wear ties, so it's a sort of smart casual, although lots of people do wear suits.

I was thinking of getting a 3-piece. I haven't worn a waistcoat since the late 90's and wondered what the current thinking was on them. In a business of about 1,000 people, I can only think of one person whoe regularly wears one, and I have always liked the look.

So, does anyone wear a 3 piece suit?

Love the look but in my current job would never wear one!
Certainly would stick on a good waist coat had i the right job, maybe even throw in a pocket watch for good measure.

Two of my suits are 3 piece affairs and they are fantastic but at the same time they send a message which is : I don't understand fashion and I don't care. I wear them with my double cuffed sleeves rolled up, cufflinks off, and look rad.

You can make of that what you will.

3-piece is overkill for daily work and will look a little silly unless you're part of the board of directors and 50+, i think they shouldn't be reserved for special occations

Wrong. Robbie mentioned 'charisma' but I would say it's attitude and being comfortable in what you're wearing, although I knew what he meant. A decently tailored 3 piece definitely says 'Look at me, I'm wearing something that hasn't really ever been fashionable since, well, ever, in recent years, and yet I'm still going to wear it. That is exactly how boss I am.'

It's not about age and it's not about stature, it's about either feeling comfortable or not. Thinking about it, this goes for all business wear, 3 piece or otherwise.

Wear what you like. I've been rocking double breasted throughout its unfashionable period. If you go against the grain make sure what you have is well cut and looks deliberate rather than you just being a spaz in a bad suit.

Seriously double breasted? Unless you are admiral of the fleet there is no way on earth you could possibly be 'rocking' that look!

Double breasted chalk stripe is my go-to when I'm feeling particularly unfashionable :) Have we talked about this before or am I thinking of a different forum?

These are the kind of lines that I have been thinking along :) I am thinking full new outfit, new shirts, new shoes, nice 3 piece suit. It will scare/shock/amuse the **** out of the peeps at work, but that's half the fun :)

Any advice on where to go? The last few 'interview' suits I bought were all from M&S and they have never let me down. Where else is worth checking out? Online or high street I don't mind, and I don't mind spending a bit, but not ridiculous. (A few hundred quid for a nice suit is an investment, any more and I won't get the value from it)

I've been wearing the same huntsman suit for 9 years. I had to smoke a lot of cigarettes to make sure I didn't grow out of that sucker. Saying that, I'm tempted to downgrade for the benefits of a more fashionable suit.

I get the urge to break the mould though, sometimes business people all look the same in their pastel shirts and chunky solid colour ties. Get that three piece and rock that ****. Get a monocle and top hat while you're at it.

hmmmmm maybe a silver topped cane too :)

Just recently bought two three piece suits and comments have been favourable in the office.

Still very much in the minority however I do see an increase in the number of people now wearing them.

Remember Gary Barlow has worn them on a number of occasions on the xfactor!!

*googles what double breasted looks like
*proxy blocks due to "pornography"
*asks someone
*gets laughed at
*works out it's to do with the column of buttons single or double
*realizes he owns both a single and double breasted suit

For my current job it's standard smart trousers and shirt. Ties not a requirement and majority do not wear them. If you come in in a suit here you would instantly be asked "what time is your interview later?" or "are you presenting today". Or possibly.... "are you gay?" unless you are a manager or someone important.

:)

Fraid so. Even have a lovely double breasted blazer with shiny gold buttons. Have a charcoal double breasted suit I had made recently which is so out it absolutely must be in.

I wear a t-shirt or polo shirt and jeans with grey nike trainers ;)

I find it funny because everyone else in the building is suited up and our offices everyone is dressed so much more casually.
