This might be old news but apparently "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 blasted past $US300 million ($324.4 million) in sales on its opening day, blowing away Hollywood films to become the highest-grossing entertainment launch ever....

...The videogame bested Batman superhero film The Dark Knight, which holds the record for the top opening weekend ever by taking in $171 million dollars in July 2008."

So, copies of one of the most expensive game releases in recent times has managed to produce more revenue than tickets to the dark knight, which cost..what...at most a quarter of the price? Not the best way to compare I would imagine..

Not entirely surprising, but kudos to IW and Activision nonetheless for such a successful release..

Didn't the pc sales only account for around 3% of that figure? Swear I read that somewhere.

Also, its stupid comparing game sales to a film given that seeing a film is a fraction of the cost of a new game.

Edit: On closer inspection this article points out just what a failure its own title is:

Activision believes MW2 will be such a hit that the California-based company will see record operating margins. Pre-orders for the videogame – priced at up to $120 - were the highest in the firm's history.

Furthermore...

Analysts expect MW2 to breathe new life into a videogame industry that has seen sales figures this year hobbled by dismal economic conditions and a dearth of hot releases.

Sounds like something taken from an Activision press release, I can think of several titles released only recently, and more strecthing over the year that can be described as "hot releases".

M0r9, your post makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. How can record pre-orders and $300million in sales in a single day be a failure?

Nobody paid £54.99 for it.

My local petrol station was selling ps3 and 360 copies for £50 each, I asked how many they sold and the guy said that they sold 11-12 of each platform on the opening day.

I only paid £26 for mine (on 360) on release day! Would never have paid the asking price otherwise.

The feat itself is not a failure, the article itself is. Although its an incredible statistic, when you consider that this is pretty much console relevant it becomes a bit less of a spectacle for PC Gaming.

As I stated, the high price of the game couples with the large amount of (console) pre-orders meant that sales figures were always going to be broken. I don't want to sound like an arse but i've already said all this in my first post. The feat itself isn't a failure, just the journalism behind it.

But most people still paid over the odds, unless of course they were doing the weekly/monthly/whateverly shop.

Ah right, I get you. I don't think anyone cares how tiny a percentage related to the PC though, except PC gamers. Activision will just be celebrating the fact that they can rip off so many console gamer so easily.

Well I have still not got it :) *proud*

Why do you feel proud? Do you think they actually care? I got it for £32. I was ****ed off with SP being uber short but now I am loving owning people on MP.

I like it. I think it was worth it. Yes, IWNet sucks ass but hey ho.

All the people boycotting it are missing out imho.
