Modern Warfare Locked at 30fps?

How he has called it a modern engine is what boggles my mind.
I suspect he meant to say it's a pretty modern game, being as it's only been out a short while. Tbf though, for such an old engine you gotta admire the things that the cod series developers have done with it. Albeit the games are now starting to look a bit dated when compared to say frostbite 2.

I think its pretty bad that they haven't made their own, the COD engine is starting to get dated again, and I don't think Infinity Ward are around anymore to fix it this time are they? I heard they went into some kind of huge legal battle with Activision some time ago (not that I keep up with that scene).

Normally I'd probably disagree but tbf, it doesn't take anything to run Modern Warfare or any of the Call of Duty titles (that's one thing they've done right; optimization).

What are the specs of the OP's Macbook Pro? I wasn't away they had any power.

8gig ram, 3610 processor

Thats it running MW3 - actually gets over 100fps at 2880x1800 which aint too shabby, I never thought Id be able to run it natively on the macbook.

Always liked how much IW get out of the engine, it still does a great job but it does show its age in places i.e. the latest DLC MP maps look amazing at first glance (tho totally rubbish gameplay wise but thats another story) but when you look at the detail its a bit lacking in places.

Tbh, the last cod game i purchased was black ops, an absolute peice of rubbish, at the time i was playing it i suffered from incredible stuttering and very low gpu usage on the gtx 470's i had in sli. For me personally, mw1 was the best of the lot. Though i still fire up cod 1 for a bit of nostalgic sp action.

That's actually really impressive. Mind you, I'd expect nothing less from a laptop that costs several grand.

I'll admit, until recently Call of Duty have held their own on the graphical side, but they've always had that same technique that Bethesda use (I can't really think of who else does) where everything is just 2D images that look 3D. I think they should really overhaul the entire engine graphically and bring it more up to Battlefield's engine Frostbite, I don't think even CoD can get away with looking outdated in the future, Bungie did it with Halo! Reach was a fantastic looking game!

Wow, that's actually really impressive a Mac can do that, they've never really been known for their gaming power. I knew some people in college who bought Macbook Pro's for £1,000. Which is a lot but for a laptop to run CoD @100+fps at that resolution, it must have cost a lot more?

Sorry, I know even less about Mac's than most things. :p

I agree, MW1 was by far the best multiplayer wise and singleplayer, the mission in Russian (I think?) with the Guillie suits with Cpt. Macmillan... I'll be 40 years old and still remember that, epic piece of video gaming.

My only gripe with bf3 on frostbite 2 is that at default settings it looks rather washed out. Ive used an fxaa injector before that really improves the look of it, though the last version i tried left ingame text a bit blurry. Always liked though how the cod series scaled very well even on older hardware, it certainly made them more accessible to the average user, to max bf3 and maintain high fps your looking at a serious amount of loot.

you do realize the next cod after black ops 2 is using the unreal4 engine . this will make the frostbite engine in bf3 look like cod is now :D

thing is cod mp games work out the box where as dice and EA fps just remain broke and look pretty :D

with the latest unreal4 engine and with how good there games work online it should be awesome

Black Ops is still rubbish (despite what some people say) they've plastered over some of the issues to try and mask them but they still lurk there. I really like some of the stuff they did but I can't get past how they just dumped the game and ran on release thats not how you treat a product your proud of so I definitely won't buy a treyarch game again.

MW3 is pretty much the pure essence of COD4-MW2, very easy to pickup and play and have a blast but nothing ground breaking and lacks the charm of COD4.

Is it still broken with sli? Still have the game but no longer have the 470's.

AFAIK and I could be wrong, but that project was canned and theres no definite engine decided for future titles.

The problem with changing engine tho - unless they can emulate the fluidity of the quake 3 engine it will change the whole feel of how the game plays and if you want a clunkier version of Call of Duty you might as well play BF3.

Does that mean gameplay changes?

I might have to give it a chance, then. :p

Wasn't just SLI it was broken with - you still get microstutter pauses on firing weapons, etc. which while very slight make the game feel a bit odd to play and still get areas where the performance feels choppy even when its displaying good framerates.

I know exactly what you mean, IdTech and all it's descendent be it IW Engine, Source or whatever all have a great smoothness and fluidity to them. Frostbite just doesn't.

Unreal 3 has a similar feel, so I think if they have to move away from what they have, UE4 could be a good bet. :)

Yep, i had to revert to using a single card. Did notice a bit of stuttering yet frame rates were consistently high. In sli, gpu usage was only at 49% per card, yet mw1/2 were consistently at 98-99%. Regarding the frostbite games of recent years, bf3 for me feels a lot clunkier than moh 2010 and bfbc2 ever did.

If they were to change Engine then Unreal is the one to go for unless they want to make one themselves, although that would obviously cost more so unlikely coming from Activision.

I know exactly what you mean about the 'feel' of IdTech 3 games but from all my experiences of Unreal Tournament they feel just as tight and responsive as say CoD4, nothing like the floaty, over sensitive and equally unresponsive nightmare that has been DICE engines of late.

Unreal has always been fairly fluid and more so with the newer incarnations but it still doesn't have the granularity in the movement idtech does - strafing for instance feels a lot more "fixed step" and while it might be more realistic its not quite as fun to play with.

A lot of engines tie movement far too religiously to the animations and while it might be "correct" it just doesn't feel as good.

I guess that's just a bit of preference - for me UT3 had **perfect** FPS Movement and feel and I'd be playing it now if it wasn't completely dead online, not really sure what you mean by granularity, it has been a depressingly long time since I last played UT3 but from what I remember the movement felt very tight and fluid.
