Alonso has had good tyre management this year and seemed a bit like Hamilton where he couldn't get the necessary heat in the tyre yesterday which is why ocon was so far ahead.

I still think he shouldn't have come back.
I also actually think Ocon probably hasn't improved and alpine have swapped a over performing driver with an under.

Which means that alpine car would be higher up.

What confuses me is how DR is doing in the mclaren. Are new cars just this hard to adapt to?

Alonso
DR
Perez

All struggling.

Which brings me to MV.
With perez now languishing behind is verstappen actually amazing? And all his team mates just haven't been up to the job? Surely it can't be 'the car is designed for him' excuse

One thing I hate about f1 is how it's so hard to evaluate a driver. Because you can come up with so many potential valid reasons for them not being /being great.

I'm confused by this too - he was doing great in the Renault and supposed to the new team leader in Mclaren - But Lando has taken up that role. I don't think hes made the best career choices - left a team that could win races for one that was fighting to be midfield, then left that team to a potentially better option only to be soundly beaten by his new team mate - I don't think he's incresed his value.

Not so sure with Perez, not quite there, but not getting lapped at least and has qualified well - has had is share of bad luck.

Ocon made a massive leap in the final races of 2020, saying he found something in the car which made a massive difference and his performance relative to Ricciardo showed that - he didn't suddenly leap ahead of him, but they were much closer.

That demonstrates that even a fairly highly rated and still young driver can take a while to adapt.

Alonso said from the outset that this season was just about getting into the right place for 2022. I don't think anyone expects the Alonso of old, but if he can get to 90% then he could still be better than most drivers. If he's not improved early next year then he needs to go back to trying to get that triple crown instead. Remember he was never a great qualifier though. - his skill was relentless consistency through a race and he's shown some early signs that that is still there.

This is one that surprised me and it's not like Norris hasn't had to adapt to a new PU either. I wasn't surprised that Norris had the beating of Ricciardo initially, but he's absolutely smashed him so far. I was a bit dubious about Sainz and Norris and how they would compare against top drivers or potential greats, as the only real comparison was Sainz vs a rookie Verstappen in one and a bit seasons at Toro Rosso and a fairly under par season against Hulkenberg. Given Sainz has been up there with Leclerc (though not consistently) and Norris is putting manners on Ricciardo I think it's fair to say they're both very good drivers at the very least - though whether they've got what it takes to fight for titles only time will tell.

One driver who has started to find his feet in a new team in the last couple of races, slightly surprisingly, is Vettel.

I don't think he's as good as his pace shows since Ricciardo left. Ever since it has always been a one car team (and that's why Ricciardo chose not to stay). The car gets designed around Verstappen and the other drivers just have to come in and do what they can. You wonder just how good the car (and Max) could be if they stopped designing it around Max and instead focussed on having a stable and consistent car that more drivers can drive well.

Perez has shown signs (qualifying at Imola and race pace) that he can get up there, but he needs to cut out the mistakes. His Q3 lap was messy anyway but was better than the pace suggested, as he lost a lot of time coming up on two cars side-by-side into La Rascasse.

Still, one car teams have been a thing going all the way back to the 50s. Alfa, Maserati, Ferrari, Tyrrell, Matra, Mercedes, McLaren, Williams, Lotus, Brabham, Benetton/Renault, and so on - I could name at least one car for each which has been developed around a single driver, or a team focussed on one driver.

Ocon is doing very well in my opinion.

RedBull and it's sister team have the same problem.
Only 1 driver in each team can drive it.

TSUNODA said that his data feed back is opposite of gasly.
And he can't work out why that is.

I hope RB go for Russell to replace Perez.

I'd be mildly curious to see Vettel in the current RBR, to see if it's characteristics are similar to when he won his drivers championships ~10 years ago and if it is, how he would fare against Max. It won't happen, it was dismissed last season by Horner, but I'd be mildly curious.

I can't help but think it's alonso doing badly. I dunno. Just a feeling I guess

That would cause more issues. Imagine if 1 team occupied all the podium spots at each race.

Yeah this is true. And it would happen a lot!
I'm definitely losing interest in f1 as time goes by. When you support a mid field team and they make bad decisions on top of having a small budget it does get tedious.

Ive gotten to the point I think f1 is more a habit than something I enjoy. Something I watch before bed on Sunday.

Watching the highlights is much more preferable than full race.

It's typical on this wet horrible weekend with not much to do is the most boring race of the year
