Hmm, shell is probably cheating? ;)

When it stops wheelspinning in second I sometimes change up to third.

Everyone keeps harping on about how great diesels and autos are...... not when you drive to work like I do. I've got similar fuel figures for every single car I've ever owned.

You sir, are comical :D

I doubt that, you would not believe how hard Weights and Measures are allowed to come down on petrol stations. I'll stick with needmorespeed's figure of 61.5 litres I think. I've taken mine well over 55 litres on many occasions.

When I worked at texaco we used to have regular testing carried out :)

Mine is a 1.8 black top, and i can get 320-350miles with my daily drive to work.
This is a dual carriageway with a roundabout every couple of miles. drive to work is only 6miles

On motorway i can get 450miles, however i hae never had close to 500miles on a tank.

If I reset my trip computer at the top of Bury hill I can get 100.4mpg on the way down out of my £300 2.0i Primera.

Some of the mpgs I have seen posted on here in the past sound incredible although you can never tell what circumstances they were obtaned under.

Your car:

It works out about 18mpg which sounds bad but have you checked tyre pressures, spark plugs, air filter etc?

I'd get it serviced, or maybe see if the cat is knackered or the lambdas are borked. Bssically £30 will see 250 miles out of my V6 mondeo and that's mixed driving. So those figures are shocking, I'd recommend sticking a diagnostic tool on it also to see if there are any faults. Also check for any air leaks under the hood. The only time my consumption ever got that bad was when I hadn't tightened up my K+N properly :)

Could well be but it's always good to service! I presume you are happy to do this yourself on an old mondeo?

Actually I was thinking of taking it to my local Ford dealership and get a full service ;)

Yeah, I'll just service it myself, shouldn't take more than half an hour on something like that.

I just don't understand it.

Everyone else gets twice the economy that I can in the CTR
Everyone else gets twice the economy that I can in the Mondeo

The only common theme here is me..........Hmmm........

I have never been able to get anything like what other people get in terms of mpg, esp out of diesels.

I think if you are used to driving resonably quick motors then you are intriniscally incapable o driving economically, i once got 38mpg out of the ST,it was that boring it was scary, so wont be doing that again.

Seeing as people are mentioning 2.0/1.8 blacktop and silvertops, whats the difference? I have a 2000 V reg 2.0 Zetec, is that a silver or black top, and which is better?

Should be black top, open the bonnet and have a look, is it black or silver??

Difference is black has slightly less power, but more economical, and more durable.
cam belt change
silver top: 5years 80k miles
black top: 10 years or 100k miles.

im sure others will be able to say more differences though :)

mondeo's ( or at least the one i drove ) do a respectable 120 miles to the gallon......... 26 miles down the m3 from the filling station and then approx 94 miles back to home on the back of an AA wagon as the cam belt snapped  never mind it was a hire car

Right the, today I've done 160 miles. Around 100 of them have been at a constant 90mph and the rest were country lanes. I filled the tank up this morning and I've used exactly 1/4 of a tank so far. I'll refill it tomorrow to find out how many gallons I've used so I can get an idea of the economy.

It's a 60l tank, you managed to get 61l in because a litre had leaked out the bottom whilst you were filling it, hence the crap mpg :p

FWIW, 32-34mpg on constant 12 mile A road runs to uni in a 2.0 blacktop focus.

Start coming off the gas earlier for corners rather than using the brakes =)
