mondeo's ( or at least the one i drove ) do a respectable 120 miles to the gallon......... 26 miles down the m3 from the filling station and then approx 94 miles back to home on the back of an AA wagon as the cam belt snapped  never mind it was a hire car

.................

Right the, today I've done 160 miles. Around 100 of them have been at a constant 90mph and the rest were country lanes. I filled the tank up this morning and I've used exactly 1/4 of a tank so far. I'll refill it tomorrow to find out how many gallons I've used so I can get an idea of the economy.

That sounds about right TBH, not wonderful but not too bad either.

I have found that the needle is pretty inaccurate.

I can do about 50miles before it will even begin to drop from a full tank.

that's because the float is submerged in the tank when the tank is full.

Astra GTE16v. You have to resign yourself to the ropey handling and dire interior, but I have never owned a more economical car that's also had decent performance. I could even get 40mpg out of it driving sedately, not that that happened very much. Shame they are nearly all rotten wrecks, I would serioulsy consider owning another one else.
I have a Cavalier with the same engine and you're right, it *can* be very economical if driven sympathetically. I believe the XE engine is actually more economical than the regular 2.0 8v 115bhp one.

my golf is between 41 and 43 litres to fill. ill get 300 miles every time.

some old engines can be pretty economical, but they have to be looked after

Just emptied the tank on the Mondeo, done 420 miles so far (the fuel light is on but there is probably enough for another 20+ miles left to go)

Looks like town driving gives atrocious economy but motorways give superb fuel economy. Shame that most of my driving is round town :(

Just worked out that I averaged 33mpg from that last tank. Not too bad really considering it's been cold and none of the driving was at a steady 56mph :)
