Hi, first post :)

Having spent years reading the forum, seeing all the people who really know these cars, I thought it was time to post... that and I really need help with my ST24.

Just been to Kwik Fit in Swindon, to check a loose exhaust, and they found a pretty big fuel leak.

I've suspected a problem for a while now, but each time it has been on the ramps before, no one could find anything, other than really old stains.

The leak itself is coming from the area of the 'down-pipe' from the filler cap, at the base of this pipe is where it is dripping, but I'm not sure what these parts are, and I don't have any way to take pictures either :(

The guy told me that the leak is either a damaged seal or a split pipe – does anyone know if this is a common fault, or any ideas on the cost to get it fixed?

Thanks for any help guys.

Scort.

Thank you for the reply and welcome :)

Not 100% sure what you mean, I know there is a 'flap' just inside the filling cap, but I haven't noticed any clicks....

P.S. Just found my Haynes manual, so I'm also looking in there, see if I notice the bit I was shown.

Edit: It's the fuel tank filler neck - basically looks like a pipe and was dripping towards the base of it.

Hi!

When you fill up your car it'll automatically shut off when it's full - this is what he's described as the "click"

If you try to start again then you're likely to overfill the tank slightly, leading to fuel leaking from the overfil vent at the top. If you tend to do this this might be the reason for the excess fuel spilt under the car

Ah, I see, lol :)

I don't think it's that, I don't think I have ever filled this car to the brim, most it ever has is 3/4 of a tank.

When I was being shown the problem, there was a fairly rapid drip, however, when I got home and parked on the drive, there was nothing dripping.

One thing I do notice, which I guess can be expected, is that there is a strong smell of fuel inside and outside the car.

The smell of fuel seems to come and go, sometimes it'll stay for hours after the engine has been turned off, other times it clears quickly.

It's not a blockled tank breather is it? I had this on an old Alfa 75. Tank breather was blocked in the filler neck so when the tank pressured up it blew fuel out of all the seals. That caused intermittent fuel loss and could stink to high heaven.

Thanks.

Sounds like it's worth checking, any tips on doing this, I take it it's something I could see without having to jack the car up?

Well I dont really know the Mondeo but I usually find them behind the carpet in the boot. It looks like a minature K&N filter on a rubber hose. Maybe Fox or another Mondeo owner can be more specific. I just pulled the filter off and you could hear the pressure relieve. Best to do it when you smell the strong petrol smell.

Ok thanks, I'll see what I can find, will consult the Haynes again first ;)

One thing the car always seems to do, after a run, is give off quite a hiss when you open the petrol cap. I don't recall any of my past cars doing this, could this be an issue, or just the norm?

Once again, thanks for the help so far guys - sorry to be so vague on the technical bits, if it were a PC I'd have it fixed by now :)

On the Mk2's it's under the rear bench I think.
