I have been getting rather low mpg from my 98 Mondeo which is a 1.8 Verona with just over 23,000 miles on it. Just wondering if anyone had any ideas what may be causing it/ any obvious things to try? I do mostly town driving, but I'm getting about 23mpg from every tank since I have owned the car back in November. I was thinking it should be somewhat higher than that, even with all the town driving.

If you spend all your time in town and are not particularly economical in terms of driving then this isn't beyond the realms of possibility - I get about 25 from my 2.0 in the same situation.

23,000 miles on an 8 year old car though? Blimey.

I think its time to sell it really.

Such a shame, Ive got a nice V8 Range Rover here that you can have for £120 if you want?

Its not got an MOT sadly, and is SORN atm. But if you have a Vectra or something I'm sure you can tow it back Ill even throw a tow rope in.

Let me know,.

(Sorry mods if this isnt allowed outside for sale forum.)

Cheers, I was afraid someone might say that it could be normal, I was sort of hoping it would be something I could fix :)

It was owned by an elderly guy before me who didn't use it a great deal.

I get the same in my 2L Primera in heavy traffic. If I get a quiet run early inthe morning and string a few lights togther so my average speed is higher (the primera has a trip computer) the MPG goes up considerably. But in stop start traffic its always about the same.

and how *** is a V8 range rover going to do over 30 mpg in town driving? your post appears to have nothing to do with his situation other than you trying to advertise your vehicle.

I understand it. :D

Ladies and Gentlemen, the saractistic joke finger buffet is located here, the oblivious moron department now has a two for one sale. ;)

Mondeo petrols have pretty bad MPG really, about 25 for town driving and 35 for motorway. If you really try and conserve petrol you can get about 40-45, but thats doing about 55mph on a motorway with a trailing wind. :p

How much did you pay for your Mondeo, sounds brand new!

If the rocker cover is silver it may be worth getting the cam belt changed. If not then don't worry.

They are only thirsty around town, you guys must drive on Motorways with 3 tonnes of lead in the boot or something.

Well mine is an owld toothless dog, I think the most I ever got out of a full tank, to empty is about 450 miles. :(

If you think your economy is bad, try removing the two half mm thick brass spacers from your float chambers. The car will still start, run and drive seemingly normally (sometimes) but you pour fuel out of the air filters.

Great.

I wondered why I did 10 miles to 25 quid of fuel. :D

And then realised it was going to cost me 25 quid to get back

Cheers guys, was just expecting it to be a little higher being only a 1.8. It was £1000 and fairly spotless condition, huge improvement (apart from mpg) over my old Rover 218 turbo diesel.

Its the black rocker cover, how come only the silver needs the cam belt looked at?

u need to face it : bigger type car in traffic = crap economy.

I got a Volvo 480 1.7 turbo, and in traffic the turbo is ALWAYS off and I get .. about 23mpg. Weighty car.

but bigger car better for cruising.
