Right, here's the situation. My old man has a W plate ST24, 38k on the clock and the speedo has died. The ford stealer (from whom it was purchased 2 years back) reckons it's not the unit itself and that it'll be expensive to diagnose/resolve. It's an electronic unit and the car is a Mk2.

Any knowledge on the subject would be greatly appreciated

There is some little sensor on the gear box that is known to fail.

The clocks are pretty easy to take out so if you have a friend with a V6 mondeo then see if they will let you borrow there clocks from it for an hour or so- sometimes the clocks can fail.

Could also be the multiplug on the rear of the clocks has worked loose.

www.fordmondeo.org - pretty sure I have seen it documented there a few times.

Cheers, will have a look over there. Apparently it's not the clocks tho as the stealer tried another working set. That would also seem to rule out the plug.
