Debating getting one of these, a decent example can be had around the £2500 these days and I'm all for value for money cars, and I'm sure I can have a lot of fun with 170BHP.

What do you need to look out for with these?

Can I get insured?, 18 w 2 Year NCB currently with Pru.

What sort of MPG should I expect out a motorway run/town.

How reliable are these compared to my Focus for example. I seem to remember something about water pump failure due to a design flaw?
 
the ghia x is considerably easier to insure, and imo a better car. Better interior, more toys, and can be made to / some quite often already come looking like an ST24 :) I've had my Ghia X since i was 18 and it only cost ~£100 more a year than my 2l LX cost.

On a motorway run, expect a decent 30mpg maybe a bit more if you set the cruise and leave it. Around town don't expect more than 22-23mpg.

Make sure you get a late V or W reg or later, have a much nicer interior (black leather instead of grey or navy blue), digital climate instead of just aircon and just generally higher quality materials used.

The interior facelift was late 99S plate onwards - this introduced the better quality leather, the chrome interior handles, etc.

There was no change to the quality of materials used. Late 99V plate onwards gained side airbags and SATC on Ghia X cars, and are noticeable becuase they have black not bodycoloured B pillars.

ah sorry i was only going off P / R reg vs V/W reg, i know the SATC wasn't introduced until just after yours, didnt realise S onwards had the facelift interior too.
 
This is mine Its a V6 ghia x with a few bits added looks very similar to Toms :)

thats a lie i Only jhad the car for 1 years and 10 months :p and they are actually £170 new from Ford I know that as thats where i brought them
 
show more pictures of your inferior interior to pursuade him to buy a W reg NMS (hey, gotta get you back for not selling me your cams and heads :p)
