I've had a problem with the car (2.0 130 tdci with 50k miles) for what feels like forever where it will suddently run out of power at 2500rpm. No warning lights or any error codes..

I'm getting fed up replacing bits and paying for diagnostics so I'm hoping someone may be able to suggest something to help.

I dont believe it's a fuelling issue because of the lack of error codes or other symptoms. No smoke, no stuttering etc.

The EGR and inlet manifold have been cleaned (EGR is now blanked), the MAF has been replaced, the turbo vanes have been freed up. The latter smoothed things out at the low end but nothing on the high end. The air filter looks a bit dirty and the fins are a bit "bent" but surely an air filter couldnt cause such a big performance degradation?

It's been checked for boost leaks by different people on several different occasions with still no joy. Its driving me absolutely insane - does anyone have any more ideas I can try?

I'm now an extremely happy man because I've just fixed it for the princely sum of £4.99

New air filter and its a completely different beast, problem 100% gone :D

That begs the question - the service interval on these is 12,500 miles and the air filter is replaced every second service, so every 25k miles. Is this not sheer lunacy given that a duff filter can cause such huge performance problems?

Probably!

Last service was a minor one, main dealer and the filter wasnt due for a change there. The one before was done by the garage I bought it from, I reckon they havent changed it. That means it's probably the original or second filter

In retrospect, I should probably have checked this sooner

The flash makes it look lighter, its nearly black. It looks like its got to the extent where it was starting to suck the filter in at high boost, its completely distorted on the bottom (pictured) and curved towards the intake on top :)

The drive home confirmed it is indeed 101% sorted - third or 4th was always the real test, it would NOT go past 2500 rpm and now pulls hard all the way to 4600rpm. Not that I drive it that way normally, but its confirmed it's fixed!

I didnt believe this would be the problem but for £4.99 I had to eliminate it

The air filter was probably not changed by some cheating, thieving garage.

Could have been worse... the cheating thieving garage could have installed the wrong filter - one that was too small for the airbox, thus allowing unfiltered air directly into the turbo. Landrover specialist garage did that to me in Leicester - they put a filter for a td5 into a 300tdi. Not only is the td5 filter smaller than the 300tdi, it also costs nearly a tenner more.

Still, I get all of my filters online now - oil/air/fuel combined for the same price as a single air filter from LR and that includes delivery. Seeing as they need to be changed every 6 moths, it's a steal.

Goes to show though - you pay a garage to service a car and its nearly impossible to see if they've done what you paid them to do - you just have to trust them

It might be paranoia on my part but I've always halved the suggested service life of filters in my cars. A dirty filter can really effect the way a car drives and they cost bugger all in the grand scheme of maintainance costs.
