This is definitely something to consider.

My situation for example -

A. I live at home, pay £75 a month rent with all my food paid for, washing completed etc. Spend approx £400-450 on fuel, receive approx £200 back from work. Therefore my total living/fuel outgoing is approx £325.

B. Move close to work and flatshare at a cost of £350 including bills. I'll now have to pay for food, factor in £30 a week for that (being generous). Still have to spend a bit of money on fuel, approx £20 a week. Therefore my total living/fuel outgoing is approx £550 (doesn't include house insurance).

At the moment, it is more cost effective for me to live at home and put up with the commute.

I'll definitely be moving out, just a case of when.

This is my train of thought at the moment I currently live with my parents and pay a similar amount in rent to you. If I was to moved my increase in outgoing living closer would leave me worse off financially but would free up a couple of hours travel time a day.

Think you're (both tbh) being a bit naive. Living in a shared house/flat is a way of getting a little bit of independence for peanuts. It's not really comparable with living with the parents. You'd also be cutting out a good bit of travel and have more time to do things you actually want to do rather than it being an extension of your work day.

Not sure what your jobs are like but I can go through patches of 11/12 hour days for months at a time. Stick a long commute on the end of that and you can write off at least one day of your weekend too - you'll just want to sit around and do nothing.

Exactly my point.

Admittedly, if I had set working hours and didn't have the option of working from home, I probably wouldn't commute.

Fair point. I have lived independently for the past 4 years; university halls, student flats and a flat with my girlfriend. Living at home for a short period of time doesn't really bother me. All my friends/girlfriend live close which obviously helps too.

I'm planning to move out in the next 9 months. This should cut my commute by half at the very least.
