Oooh. I've never really been in this part of the forum. Seems new.. somewhat scary..

Anyway, as you guys know a lot about this..

Can you give me your opinions for which car you'd take along for the Mongol Rally?

Rules:

1.2 litre or less (maybe stretch to 1.3 and pay the fine)
Less than 10 years old
Comfortable enough for 3 blokes and stuff, roof rack etc.
Relatively fuel efficient
RELIABLE!

We're looking at everything from Dihatsu Hijets to Siecentos, but would love some other opinions.

Many thanks!

Toyota Corolla 1.3 Sportif - Covers all that I think, good enough handling/size.

Is this for actually taking part in or getting there? Whats the fine for the extra 0.1ltr?

edit: or toyota starlet turbo (1.3 iirc) for speed, not quite the frame or effecient though.

double edit: stick starlet engine in corolla, perfect ;)

I'd personally love to do it in something like a R5 GTT, but its a small bucket tbh and a 1.4. Maybe a GTT lump in another model shell.

If you are restricted to 1.2litres that is going to cut your choice of car way down.. if your wanting something with poke.

Do you have a budget for the car?

It's not a race rally.. we're not aiming to be the fastest at all. People do it in 2CVs!

and no real budget, just nothing too bad, as we'll be leaving the car there when it's over

pah pick something fast and choke them on sand, otherwise its not fun.

and don't pick a 2cv, if you crash your dead, no escape.

how about a mini?

Old shape daihatsu charade, enough room for 3 just, and i will run on the gravy they call petrol in mongolia. Fifth gear did a thing on this ages ago, and the daihatsu came out on top, lol. Do you still have to give the cars to the locals when your done?
