Mongoose, Scorpion, Magnex or Milltek?

How come I've heard of absolutely loads of Millteks that have snapped or rusted through? I've spoken to loads of owners that have had them replaced by Milltek, I see it all the time on the Mini forum where somebody has a Milltek up for sale after it was replaced.

They had 1 bad batch of exhausts where the soldering was poor and this caused them to crack/snap. Queue a few posts on the internet and everyone and his mate jumps in saying they are rubbish.

I've had my Miltek for about a year now and also keep it clean and polish it up. Looks almost as good as the day i bought it. Although if I was buying again I would probably go for a Yozza (Clio only?), as Fred has a good relationship with the folks on clio sport and his work is regarded as being top notch.

my clio 182 has a miltek and i think it sounds lovely.

Snap.

Didn't realise how good it sounded until a friend opened my boot the other day :p

They get a right bashing over on CS because of this 'They make cracking exhausts' etc etc

Everyone on various forums seems to rate Milltek but also everyone seems to say that they rust quite badly so with that in mind I don't see why there's so much love for them. Maybe they've somehow managed to build up a brand and are living off that brand name even though they're not actually that good?

i think its forum sheep syndrome.

i hate them. bad fit on the S4, ive rewelded two VR6 centre box brackets by milltek, a guy i know has one on his 16v golf, terrible fit and sounds awful

I had heard mainly good things about Milltek, only reason i went for the Scorpion was hearing it on another ST. Reading some of the comments here im glad i did.

Milltek's reputation seems to have dropped some what. Seeing as I was ordering over the net and getting it fitted separately it wasn't something that I was willing to risk. Different story if the company you bought it from are also doing the fitting, in that case I would just say that it was their problem to sort it :p

My Piper one went on straight away although the supplied clips self destructed and replacements had to be used. The garage fitting it said they were crap, the supplier said that the garage over tightened them... either way it was an easy fix.

Mine was 304 grade stainless, it doesn't rust... as far as I'm aware they are all 304 grade. Can't comment on center boxes as mine was a straight through full system, the only time I've heard of them snapping is when they are not hung properly.

Quite often the welds aren't stainless though and it is these which rust.

Didn't your one need the brackets re-welding or something? It is that sort of thing that gave the likes of Milltek and Blueflame a bad rep.
The fitter didn't like the way it fit, so he did reweld the rear bracket.
He said it wasn't uncommon. Didn't bother me though as it didn't cost me anything :p

That would be down to the skill of the welder though, my back box was clamped on, there were not any welds to speak of, it was a manifold bolted to a pipe, with a backbox stuck on the end...think mine ended up about 700 pounds, that's manifold, pipe, and back box, I had to rero-fit a sport cat afterwards when my mot guy stopped turning a blind eye to emissions.

I have a Piper Catback. Its 2nd hand, about 5 years old and doesn't have a spec of rust on it. The Milltek manifold i have, which is less than 2 years old, and is generally protected from the weather, is so rusty you wouldn't think it was stainless steel.

However, I'm not sure what Piper are like on Focus's but on my Fiesta it makes my ears bleed, but then that's the price i pay for having to cruise at 4000rpm? Id much rather a Milltek Resonated Exhaust but im worried at how bad Milltek's rust.

Do you know if Dave at Mountune would just install one of their maps?

The mountune stuff is only available as a package for the most part - I believe Ford made this a must as a condition of the kits being 'Ford approved' and not effecting the warranty on new/nearly new car. So the answer is...no.
