A while ago had a thread which consisted of;

I noticed today when accelerating my engine hesitates, not as in when you put your foot down it takes a while to kick in, but as in I go from a standing start and put my foot down and when the engine hits around 4k it then stop accelrating and makes a low grumble noise + drops 0.5k in revs and then 2 seconds later it shots back upto 4.5k revs!

This happens in all the gears but most noticeable in 2nd and 3rd

94 Escort 1.6l 16v

Then

I think the clutch is okay feels normal

Could it be "bad" fuel (is there such a thing?) as i filled it from empty last night and now...

Took out the plugs and checked the spacing and sprayed wd40 onto the leads to make sure they are making contract and that made no difference, also the air filter is still clean as i only changed it 2 weeks ago

Then
theres a engine cover over where the spark plugs go, and i had a look just now and theres water in there?!

Also 1 lead does look a little worse for ware

And last but not least a spark plug has cracked (the porcerlin bit) i KNOW i didnt crack it so somehow the engine did?

And lastly

Well replaced 2 of the plugs with the old ones (which i changed 6 wks ago) and then I went to buy a set of HT leads... Forty ****ing quid? wtf? So in the end i found out a set i took of my dead (RIP) fiesta for a couple of years ago 'n replaced one and now it is working okay, just burning a little white smoke which im guessing is the remains of water..

Now;

Oil burning at a fair rate 0.5l for 130miles, when accelerating hard theres a fair amount of smoke out the back (blue colour). While rev stationary theres soot coming out of the exhust, temp seems okay and no water from rad. missing, and my mpg petrol is better than normal?!

any ideas?

do I need a new car?

Blue smoke is usually an indication that it's burning oil. Maybe the oil is getting past the rings somehow?

Yes :p
If it's going to be expensive to fix (it doesn't sound too healthy so may well be) then you'd be safer replacing it for something else. A '94 Escort isn't worth any more than a couple of hundred quid so there's no point in spending more than or close to the car value in fixing it.

Going by Ford engines the headgasket is probably on its way out. It blows through from the bore to an oilway and starts pushing the oil through which is what causes the blue smoke. Take the oil filler cap off the rocker cover and stick your hand over the hole. If there's pressure there then that's your problem. Replace the headgasket and it'll probably be fixed.

DIY if you can lay your hands on a torque wrench. Allow a weekend to do it if you've never done one before, have the Haynes manual and some cold beers handy and the headgasket will be about £20.

Or about £600 from your local rip off garage to do it for you...

I have a similar problem although its not burning nearly as much oil. A compression test shows that the piston rings on cylinder number 2 have failed which is causing oil to blowback into the chamber and burn. This gives me a nice sluggish start when I floor it, but has improved mpg.

Oil burning can also be the result of failed valve stem seals or a head gasket.
