Didn't want to thread crash so i thought i'd start a new one. Here are my pics from saturday ( didn't go sunday )
This was my first motorsport outing with the camera, trying to capture fast cars in focus is hard but i think i eventually got the hang of it!
C+C welcome.

They started out like this, and i have an awful lot like this

and after filling a card or two produced a few winners in my eyes

I think i'm going to get some printed out 30"x20" using the latest photobox offer so if you think they lack/need anything just let me know.

Feel free to put any other pics from the day in here.

Nice crisp pics , panning can be a bitch sometimes :) . The only criticism I would have is that some are on too much of an angle for my taste.

I was there sat / sun but didn't get many keepers at all :(

You certainly got the hang of it :) What camera/lens(es) were you using?

I haven't had time to process any of mine properly :( Hopefully at the weekend I'll be able to get around to doing a few.

The one of the orange Megane is very good. Nice panning!

The last one is nice, however the speaker in the foreground is really distracting.

Still, for a first try at motorsport they are very good.

Couldn't agree more ^

They all look pretty nice, agree with everyone else about the speaker in the last one. Can't find any other niggles and id though id add that i really like the angles you have got on those shots, like them :)

I was using a canon 350d with the 80-200 f4.5-5.6 with a hoya circular polariser.
Pretty much most of the time it was full zoom at 200mm, i'd love the 100-400L but need to save big stylee for it!!

Thanks for the comments.

Doesn't that now mean you can't enter this for the comp?

* Photos that have been commented on previously by any of the judges, will not be considered.

Yeah, which is why its recommended if you are thinking of entering images into a competition you clearly mark it with No Judges please.

thats ok i was going to change it anyway as its not exactly an original thought on the theme, just need to get my thinking cap on ;) :D

Nice shots, love the Megane :).

Is there any particular technique to pulling off good panning shots?

Practice, a steady hand, standing in a position so you can pan the shot without having to move your feet, practice and also practice.

Overall nice shots, for a first time you can't argue. One thing would be to watch the backgrounds, they can be distracting to the focus of the image.

Your shutter speeds are too high resulting in a loss of action/motion.

I have to say those look similar to mine it looks as though the car is standing still, really should have used much lower than 1/4000, what sort of shutter speeds should i be using? (at a guess less than 1/1000)

Also has to be said I was less than impressed with the sharpness particularly at the long end of the Tamron 28-300, so I've got 1 of these waiting at home :)

It depends on the car speed, but around 1/200 is a good area to aim for :)
