Ok, so my IT teacher seems to think that Taxi companies don't charge by distance travelled, but use a database of millions of routes with predefined fixed prices instead.

And he made this quick spreadsheet to explain it to me:
taxi-hire.png

He told me the list continues for every other possible door-to-door combination.

When I asked him about the "meters" used in cabs, he replied..

"What? NO"

...in an extremely weird way, it was as if he was thinking "oh crap, I've failed, I'd better back up my BS with even more BS, or he'll think I'm an idiot"

...and then he started saying more crap to back up his stupidity.

Taxi's use meters.
Private hire vehicles quote on booking.

There is no such thing as a big database, your teacher, unsurprisingly, is a complete tool.

Some use meters, some compare mileage on journey done to a sheet they keep above the sun visor.

I don't know where that info comes from, but I doubt the truth is the story from your IT teacher.

ICT teachers are almost always idiots. Mine had the cheek to say Cisco was wrong when I used them as a source.

The cabe meters are determined by the miles travelled and the time taken, it usually clocks over a set price per distance travelled but if your waiting in a traffic it will clock over with the time aswell i think

Taxis in edinburgh seem to go by time in the cab, apposed to distance. Been in a couple where they have turned the meter of due to really bad traffic/them taking the wrong route.

Are you sure he didn't say 'take for example a cab firm who want to keep a database of the costs of each journey' - i.e. it was just a theoretical (though rubbish) example to get you to create in excel what really should be in Access.

Oh, and another example...

He said hard disks don't make any noise AT ALL, and are completely SILENT while reading/writing. He said if your HDD makes noise it means its broken.

He managed to convince the other kids in the class, but his BS will never pollute my brain.
