Just read this interesting article, however, I realized soon after that no Gaming company makes money from selling consoles (Example - Microsoft lost money every XBOX they sold). Sony will make money from selling PS3 games.

Nintendo make money from selling consoles.

Microsoft planned to lose money on the XBox and the 360, it was part of their long term strategy.

No idea on Sony to be honest but will read that article now.

Not only COULD it happen, but we're going to tell you why it WILL happen.

It really gets my goat when your average Joe (or in this case Joanne) on the street thinks they know more about business than a huge international corporation. No offence but I'm sure Sony have "done the math".

Whilst I fully believe that a company the size of Sony is capable of making a mistake on this scale I also like to think that they have atleast some idea of what they are doing... or at least more so than the "ElectricSistaHood" or whoever else has an opinion on the matter.

I'm not going to read the article. I assume it is relating to Sony's selling a console for a loss plan and if everyone buys a console but never buys a game or BD then Sony will go under.

I am going to shout so that everyone will here (most people on here do not need to be shouted at but it is my hope that my shouting will be heard throughout the internet)

SONY WILL FORCE THE CONSUMERS TO BUY AT LEAST 3 GAMES IN ORDER TO MAKE THEIR BOOKS BALLANCE!

Who hates Sony enough to spend £500 on a console and then not buy any games? And no, Bill Gates doesn't count. ;)

Personally, I couldn't be bothered - maybe one day they'll drop in price enough for me to have one, but I got my PC for my shooters and RTS, and I'll soon have a Wii for all the quirky little things my PC is rubbish for :)

This Article is rubbish. Type of thing id expect The Inquirer to come up with really.

The Game division only makes-up 12% of their revenue. Here are the breakdowns:

Electronics: 64.3%, Game: 12.0%, Pictures: 9.3%, Financial Services: 9.3%, All Other: 5.1%

PDF for the above figs: link

In fact financial services are their biggest growth area in Japan. Bravia TVs are big sellers everywhere. Sony is diverse enough to get through this mini-crisis. I've been impressed by the PS3 and have no doubt that they will sell huge numbers over the coming years. Manufacturing costs gradually drops and the retail price will come down as well.

Is that how much they are going to be? .

i've always been in awe of sony as i was growing up .i admit the other electronic giants like toshiba, samsung etc have caught up and possibly beaten sony in some aspects
i hope the ps3 does well they done ok by me in the past.

all the microsoft fanboys seem to think sony are stupid or something

infact i dont even know why people hate sony so much and want them to fail etc ?

apart from the crappy buggy software that came with my sony hdd walkman  eveything of sonys ive ever bought or used has been quality.

could moan about microsoft windows all day tbh :p although apart from the noise and size my xbox / xbox 360 have been fine too

i've also heard that. the first xbox lost them money per sale of console. although I bet this was to get their name on the market rather than make money

There was that but also when MS released the Xbox they were novices to the console market and made several deals which meant that they did not benifit from later economies of scale. In effect they are paying more or less the same amount to make each original xbox today* as they were back when they first started making them

*Assuming they are still manufacturing original xboxs (which I doubt)

I think Sony havent dealt well with the strong competetion that MS have brought to the Console industry. They will have to go back to the drawing board for next time and will probably bring out something amzing next time. MS will have something to prove next time and in the end the consumer wins and so its all gravy.

reguarding the topic of this thread, sony are sinking themselves!! delaying a ps3 means no-one can buy one, meaning no-one can buy any games anyway :p they really havn't got the idea of this new console. it can't sell if it isn't out
i will be very interested to see which is fastest out of ps3 and 360. I think MS have hit it with the 360 I think they are holding the power back at the mo

To the OP: wouldn't it make more sense just to not buy one? Then their sales figures are not going to be high and still lose a large amount on building the consoles, with no gain back.
