hello, my golf is costing me too much, I'm having to fill up every 4 days and basically I can't afford it.

I'm looking for a new car, something like a 107 that will do 60+mpg

any ideas?

thanks :)

Eh let me get this straight, your car is costing to much in fuel, so you are going to sell it and pay more money for a new car to save money on fuel.

Which model or Golf is it and how old is it?

Work out what you would be saving by swapping from a 35mpg Golf to a new 60mpg car... for example:

20,000 miles a year @ 35mpg = 571 gallons = 2594 litres = £2386 of 92p/litre petrol.

20,000 miles a year @ 60mpg = 333 gallons = 1513 litres = £1438 of 95p/litre diesel.

Total saving = £948 per year.

But... you've got to consider the rate of depreciation of the new car compared to the old car. A Y-plate Golf might only lose £500 over a year but a brand new 107 might lose over £1000 eating into the fuel saving. Also consider the cost of financing the new car, insurance difference, servicing and repairs etc...

The Clio diesels are insanely frugal, but if you want cheap don't buy new...
Something like a 51-plate Clio diesel, the 80bhp version rather than the 65 would be cheap to buy and over 60mpg.

its a 1.8 gl golf (97)

it needs some more stuff doing to it, and road tax coming up. just exploring the possibilty of getting something cheap and perhaps free insurance to cut me some slack in terms of monthly payments

i'm doing 60 miles per day at the moment.

Honest John in the Telegraph always seems to recommend the new Panda when people are looking for economical cars. The 1.2 petrol has combined 50mpg, and the 1.3 diesel 65mpg.

anysavings on fuel will be lost with the money you are laying out on for the new car.

as I said in another thread unless you sell your car and buy another for the same amount or less it is a pointless exercise

add in depretiation of a new car as has been said and you will end up worse off

Sell your car and get something for the same amount of money :)
