Quick Question for all you car experts anyone know if there is a minimum time that I have to have remaining on my MOT certificate to get a new tax disc?

No as long as there is an MOT valid on the DVLA database you can tax your vehicle.

^^ yeah that ^^ same with insurance, you could onlyl have a day left on your insurance but it's still valid to get one.

My pain is why does the MOT and Tax always come at the same time, always messes my money up.

a) You know its coming, put £x a month aside for 12 months.
b) If you really can't manage that, buy 6 months tax. Then, in 6 months time, go back to 12 months. Bingo, MOT and tax half a year apart. Although MOT's only really cost £30 so I'm not sure what the big deal is.

Yeh the idea for 6 months works best I think... that way you can spread the cost a little as well... if your like me, I only have to pay £65 for half the year... that way you've got a little less to spend on Tax.

Yeah I have been trying to plan ahead for this cost, a few months ago the car was running fine, tyres had tread etc etc. But it's all fallen apart in the last few weeks and now it's all coming at the same time.

I have done the 6 month tax cost to split the 2 apart so come 6 months I'll buy a yearly one and then they will be apart for good.

Doesn't help I am trying to move out as well lol

Cheers for the quick response lads I'll be off to the post office shortly then, can't renew online as only renewed my insurance yesterday and It's not showing in the database yet!

30 quid MOT I wish, there is always something that goes wrong that adds a few pounds even if it's only some blown bulbs and a bald tire!

Tyres don't wear out and bulbs don't blow on MOT day, though. It's just most people are lazy and reckless and more than happy to spend their time never bothering to check tyres and ignoring blown bulbs until the MOT tester does it for them.

Having dealt with this same issue last week:

Technically your MOT needs to be valid on the date that the new tax disc comes into effect. Having a valid MOT on the day you buy the tax disc isn't enough. For this reason I was unable to tax my car online last week. Instead I took it to the PO hoping that the woman behind the counter wouldn't pay too much attention. I came away with my new tax disc \o/

That reminds me, I need a tax disc. At something utterly retarded and unjustifiable like £215. Bizarrely, if My car was, say, an otherwise identical but 12 month older X reg model it would be about £20-30 less to tax
